Latvia is a relatively unknown (and definitely underrated) country. On a trip earlier this year, we visited Riga, Bauska, and Jelgava while passing through. From palaces to museums, and churches to restaurants, Latvia greatly exceeded expectations! Have you been to Latvia before?

Our final day took us to the impressive Cliffs of Moher on Ireland’s western coast. The cliffs go for miles and are hundreds of feet high. Next we drove through the Burren and then to the town of Kinvarra for lunch. We also stopped to look at Dunguaire Castle before heading back to Dublin.

Ring of Kerry, Part 1. Driving Ireland’s Ring of Kerry is one of the country’s highlights. Scenery everywhere looks like it belongs on a postcard. The incredible Kerry Cliffs were the highlight of Day 1. We also visited where the Transatlantic Cable entered Ireland on Valencia Island (the first communication was sent by Queen Victoria to the United States in August 1858).

Blarney Castle, Mizen Head and Ladies View Lookout Point

We started our day at Blarney Castle, where many kissed the Blarney Stone to receive the gift of gab. The castle is a great example of 15th century tower houses and has expansive gardens.

Next, we headed to Mizen Head, the south western tip of Ireland with incredible views.

Finally on our way to Killarney, we stopped at the famous Ladies View lookout point.

Kinsale is great day trip from Cork. The colorful waterfront town has plenty of shops, restaurants and pubs. Nearby is the Charles Fort built in the 1600s in the shape of a star to defend against Britain’s adversaries. A guided tour explains the intricacies and functionality of the fort, along with its demise. We ended the day back in Cork for dinner and music at some local pubs.

Kilkenny and the Rock of Cashel make for a great day. In Kilkenny, we took a guided tour of Kilkenny Castle and stopped to see Saint Canice’s Cathedral, the second oldest medieval cathedral in Ireland. Kilkenny is great for shopping and eating. Note: this area of Ireland has not had rain in weeks and looks parched.

The Rock of Cashel has witnessed centuries of history, including being the site where some kings were crowned. Now it is the home of a ruined cathedral on the hilltop that fascinates visitors.

Ireland exceeded expectations again! Upon arrival, Senator Mark Daly greeted us and explained the strong ties between the United States and Ireland. Senator Daly serves as Chairman of the Senate of Ireland, so this was quite a welcome from a great friend of America.

We visited EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum and the Jeanie Johnston to learn about the mass emigration from Ireland and Irish culture.

Next was Trinity College, where we visited the famous library and saw the Book of Kells. Then, we toured the Guinness Storehouse.

We also visited Saint Patrick's Cathedral, The National Museum of Ireland, and Saint Stephen’s Green.

Dublin was an enjoyable experience. Stay tuned for more from this epic voyage…

Inveraray Castle near Loch Fyne is the ancestral home of The Duke and Duchess of Argyll, chiefs of Clan Campbell. The castle was built in the mid-1700s and is definitely worth a visit. Inside, the armory hall is fascinating.

We enjoyed a modern lunch at Loch Fyne Oysters Bar.

Finally, we ended the day at Stirling Castle. The buildings there today were built in the 1400s - 1600s. Stirling Castle was one of the Royal palaces of Scottish kings and queens before becoming part of Great Britain. There is a lot of history here in this very fortified complex!

The Isle of Staffa has hexagonal shaped rock and column formations, a true geological wonder. Fingal’s cave is the main draw on the island. Puffins and other wildlife can also be found here during certain seasons.
