A simple tap with a payment card to charge an electric car is exactly what EV drivers mean when asking for simplicity and convenience at the charge point.

In the UK, new Public Charge Point Regulations now reflect this wish. Charging point operators have until November 2024 to enable contactless payments at public charge points above 8 kW.

AFIR (Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation), the new framework for the deployment of charging infrastructures in Europe, comes into force on 13 April 2024.

What does the new regulation entail and what it means for EV charging service providers across the continent?

🇪🇺 As an EU regulation, it takes precedence over national laws and applies directly to all Member States.

📈 The AFIR aims to promote the development of charging infrastructures for electric vehicles and refuelling stations for alternative fuels along the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

🛣️ According to the regulation, fast EV charging stations must be available every 60 kilometres. In addition, a minimum charging capacity per registered EV must be provided by each Member State.

💳 The regulation also introduces new rules for important aspects like payments, price transparency, interoperability and accessibility.
