Left Behind on an Island: How a Dream Cruise Ended in Tragedy off Australia’s Coast

On Lizard Island — a tiny patch of land among the coral maze of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef — the body of an elderly woman was found. She was a passenger of the cruise ship Coral Adventurer, which had anchored there the previous day.

The voyage, a 60-day expedition costing around €45,000, included a visit to Lizard Island for snorkeling and hiking. The woman, about 80 years old, couldn’t complete the trail to the island’s highest point and decided to return to the pier. But the ship sailed away without her.

She was traveling alone, and no one noticed her absence until dinner — when one seat remained empty. By then, the vessel was already far from the island. Late that night, the crew alerted the authorities and turned back, but it was too late.

Her body was found on October 26, near the walking trail that leads to the shore. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority is now investigating why no headcount was done before departure, why the search took so long, and whether her life could have been saved.

Meanwhile, the Coral Adventurer continues its cruise as scheduled.
