“Good morning Spain… from Portugal!

Only a stone’s throw away, yet somehow a different language, different time zone, different phone signal and different climate (well maybe not)…

Here we asked Eddie what makes training at Balearic Helicopters different from other flight schools… 🚁

“The first thing you will notice is the ground schooling given at Balearic Helicopters. We do not head out to the aircraft without a proper briefing. Jonny highlights the knowledge and understanding of what we are really doing, and this is allowed to take time.”

That foundation makes all the difference.

What qualities do you look for when you know a student has the potential to become a great pilot?

As Jules said in Pulp Fiction: “Personality goes a long way”

Someone who is willing to learn, we are in an adult learning environment, if you cannot be bothered to learn no one is going to make you!
Someone who is disciplined, the helicopter can be unforgiving to the person who doesn’t pay attention or tries to operate outside their own and the aircraft limits.

Humble… wanting to learn, accept mistakes and feedback and continuously want to improve. The “I know everything” attitude will not last long in a helicopter.

Risk aware, not risk seeking. Flying, like most activities, has some sort of risk involved. Being aware of the risks, and how to avoid or mitigate them is a daily part of flying.

Learning to become a pilot isn’t quite what people expect…

It’s not just about flying, it’s about the level of commitment it takes behind the scenes.

As Eddie puts it, it’s like learning a whole new language. It takes time, consistency and full focus to really make it work.

After more than 25 years flying in Mallorca, do you still have a favourite route or place to fly?

Jonny: "Nope…. Every time I get into a helicopter I know how lucky I am to have the best views in the World. I see something new and learn something new each and every flight"

Some moments in aviation take you places you wouldn’t expect…

When came to Mallorca to film their Classic Rally special, I was asked to do the aerial filming for them.

So we spent several days flying the BBC crew around Mallorca and meeting up with the cast.

was already a fixed wing pilot, so we talked shop.

was really interested in learning to fly, but it was after his accident and head injury so wasn’t sure if he could. We spoke in detail about flight training, regulations and medical requirements. He later went on to complete his R44 PPL and buy an R44 in the UK.

thought we were all mad for talking aviation…

The nice thing was they are all exactly like they are on TV, and didn’t come across as “TV personalities” who change behind the scenes once the camera is off.

When I’m flying, I’m flying.

No distractions. No messages. No noise. Just the aircraft and the task at hand.

In aviation, focus isn’t optional. It’s what keeps everything safe.

In everyday life, it’s easy to get pulled in a hundred different directions at once.

But the same principle applies.

Do one thing. Do it well. Everything else can wait.

Jonny shares his final reflections from life in the cockpit in Part 6 of his blog series.

This week we asked Eddie what moment during training made him realise he had made the right career choice… 🚁

“I knew I was going to have a harder time with theory than flying. Once I passed my theory I was already 75% done with my hours flying for CPL(H). By then I knew I would pass this and not stop flying any time soon.”

A pretty defining moment.
