Part 1 of the French "Road" Trip... Helicopter Style!

Who needs roads when you've got rotors?

The adventure began with a stunning flight from Mallorca to Empuriabrava, before heading on to our first overnight stop at the beautiful Chateau Blavou.

After a well-earned evening of great food and wine, we lifted off the following morning and flew into Le Mans for one of the world's most iconic motorsport events – the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans

With the racing excitement behind us, Sunday saw us continue north through spectacular French countryside to our next château destination, Chateau Sully, in Normandy.

So far, the trip has delivered everything we love about helicopter touring:

· Fantastic weather
· World-class racing
· Amazing food
· Excellent wine
· Great company

Following the Monaco Grand Prix, one of these beautiful superyachts required its recurrent Helideck Crew training for HLO (Helicopter Landing Officer) and HDA (Helideck Assistant) personnel.

With a last-minute schedule change and some careful coordination, our team was able to deliver the complete training package onboard, covering theory, practical exercises, and culminating in live flight operations. Conducting the final exercises with an actual helicopter on deck adds a level of realism that simply cannot be replicated in a classroom environment, allowing crew members to experience the pressures, procedures, communication, and teamwork required during real-world operations.

Helicopter operations on superyachts demand professionalism, discipline, and a commitment to safety. Effective helideck crews play a critical role in ensuring every arrival and departure is conducted efficiently and safely, protecting passengers, crew, and aircraft alike.

What qualities do you look for when you know a student has the potential to become a great pilot?

As Jules said in Pulp Fiction: “Personality goes a long way”

Someone who is willing to learn, we are in an adult learning environment, if you cannot be bothered to learn no one is going to make you!
Someone who is disciplined, the helicopter can be unforgiving to the person who doesn’t pay attention or tries to operate outside their own and the aircraft limits.

Humble… wanting to learn, accept mistakes and feedback and continuously want to improve. The “I know everything” attitude will not last long in a helicopter.

Risk aware, not risk seeking. Flying, like most activities, has some sort of risk involved. Being aware of the risks, and how to avoid or mitigate them is a daily part of flying.
