The House select committee on the Capitol insurrection has a duty far beyond investigating one of the most traumatic days in US history. Its wider mission is to expose and catalog an assault on democracy that is still going on.

Faster, cleaner, greener: What lies ahead for the world's railways

Faster, cleaner, greener and packed with advanced technology; rail is the only transport mode currently well placed to provide the backbone of our future mobility needs.
But, while a few niche projects promise ultra high-speed travel, much of the industry is focused on keeping the world's increasingly urbanized population moving while simultaneously limiting the effects of climate change.
And then there's the pandemic.
Like many other sectors of the travel industry, train operators across the globe have experienced one of their toughest-ever periods over the last two years.
Passenger numbers collapsed overnight in 2020 as lockdowns prevented commuters and leisure travelers from leaving home.
Two years on, Monday to Friday commuting looks to be a thing of the past as many of us choose to work from home or spend just a couple of days a week in the office.
This poses a huge threat to the world's rail companies, which have relied on this lucrative, predictable source of revenue for since the mid-19th century.
All of this makes it seem an unlikely time to be talking about a "golden era" for rail travel.
But, as we approach the 200th anniversary of the first passenger railway in 2025, it's become more important than ever for trains to deliver sustainable mobility in a world facing the challenges of climate change, increasing urbanization and population growth.

The first weekend of summer for the Uvalde, Texas, community is filled with funeral plans and a presidential visit on mass shootings

This weekend would have been the first one of summer for 19 students and two teachers gunned down at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, Tuesday. Now, instead of lakeside BBQs and park trips, residents in the small town are mourning and planning funerals ahead of a presidential visit Sunday.

Grief and anguish have had a tight grip on Uvalde since an 18-year-old gunman opened fire at Robb Elementary School, turning a day that began with student honor roll achievement celebrations into a nightmare. The gunman was shot dead by authorities inside a classroom more than an hour after he entered the school.
The massacre, America's deadliest school shooting since the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012, has been followed by conflicting official accounts of how it unfolded. The delayed police confrontation with the mass shooter has compounded parents' anger, with some saying a quicker response could have saved children's lives.
"Everybody is frustrated about the failures of what happened," Texas state Sen. Roland Gutierrez said Saturday. "No community anywhere in the United States should have to deal with this."
Ahead of his planned visit to Uvalde Sunday, President Joe Biden said while tragedy cannot be outlawed, America can be made safer.

US and Taiwan could begin talks on closer economic ties 'in a few weeks'

Taiwan and the United States could begin talks to deepen trade and economic ties "in a few weeks," two senior Taiwanese government officials told CNN on Friday.

The new discussions will "explore concrete ways to deepen the US-Taiwan trade and investment relationship," the officials said, with the focus on institutionalizing cooperation in supply chain resilience, labor, environment and sustainable development.
A formal announcement will come after "coordination and consultations are made," according to a senior official.

What parents should know about Covid-19 vaccines for kids under 5

Pfizer and BioNTech announced Monday that three doses of their vaccine were safe and produced a strong immune response in children 6 months to 5 years old.

This followed Moderna's earlier announcement about its two-dose vaccine being safe and producing a good immune response in young children.
The US Food and Drug Administration is considering Moderna's application for emergency use authorization of its vaccine for this youngest age group and will also be considering Pfizer's soon.

Report into Boris Johnson's 'Partygate' scandal published after months of speculation
London (CNN)Boris Johnson is bracing for a battle to save his premiership after a long-awaited report into a series of lockdown-breaking parties in Whitehall and Downing Street criticized a culture of rule-breaking parties and published photographs of the British Prime Minister at two separate events.

Senior civil servant Sue Gray, who wrote the report, said "the senior leadership at the centre" of Johnson's administration "must bear responsibility" for a culture that allowed several parties to take place.
She added there is "no excuse for some of the behaviour" she investigated, which on at least one occasion included "excessive alcohol consumption" and saw a staff member vomiting from over-drinking.

Don't blame your dog the next time you give in to those begging eyes. We actually bred that quality into domesticated dogs starting some 30,000 years ago.
