Leg 5 - the final stretch of our rail journey to the Baltic states.

An easy and comfortable run from Riga to Tallinn, with a straightforward change at Valga, before arriving in Estonia's capital. First stop: Baar Living Room for a warm and friendly welcome, then on to Telliskivi Creative City for food, beers, and a great atmosphere.

A bonus railway moment too-spotting a TEP70 locomotive with a recording coach (in the rain, naturally...). And, of course, making full use of Tallinn's excellent tram network to get around.

Leg 4, take 2! After plenty of double (and triple) checking, our train from Šiauliai rolled into Riga right on time and we were finally on our way again.

Losing 24 hours - albeit very pleasantly spent in Kaunas - meant just a day in Riga instead of two, so no time to lose. A visit to the Latvian Railway History Museum was a must, followed by making the most of Riga's excellent tram network to explore the city's hostelries... including one with Tatra T4 trams in the beer garden.

A beautiful day to start leg 4 of our journey through the Baltics (not the Balkans, despite my repeated attempts to say otherwise!).

Things got interesting quickly when we realised our train to Riga had already departed-its timetable quietly amended due to engineering works, but not exactly shouted about.

No time to dwell, plans changed on the fly: a detour to Kaunas (new territory for all of us), before heading on to Šiauliai near the Latvian border... setting us up to catch the Riga train the following morning, just a little less early.

A break from travelling offered the chance to spend some time exploring Vilnius. A quiet day taking in a few pubs, the railway museum and railway park, and some time around the station area.

A day trip to the Aukštaitija Narrow Gauge Railway. Sadly the advertised service wasn't running, but still a great day exploring the railway museum, taking a ride on the battery draisine, and visiting the works at Panevėžys.

After a restless night aboard the sleeper from Poznań, we arrive in Warsaw - bringing Leg 2 to a close.

There's just enough time for strong coffee, breakfast, and a fleeting rethink of life decisions...

Then it's straight back on the rails. Leg 3 awaits, taking us north-east toward Vilnius.

Leg 2 of the Baltics rail trip.

Departing St Pancras International, we head for Brussels before connecting onto an ICE to Köln, then Berlin, before continuing through to Poznań.

A surprisingly straightforward day where, for once, everything seemed to work as planned - with the restaurant cars doing their part particularly well.

Far fewer delays than Leg 1, and we roll into Poznań at 00:22, ready to wait for the sleeper onward to Warsaw.

Approximately 2,000 miles to go - Gobowen to the Baltic states by rail.

Day 1 was meant to be a simple hop down to London... until a dewirement and a separate lineside fire shut down the West Coast Mainline.

Arrived into London 295 minutes late - that's a record for me. Fingers crossed todays leg goes a little better!

A trip into Vitoria-Gasteiz, capital of the Basque Region of Spain. Made easy with convinient park and ride by tram. A beautiful city with lots to do, particularly impressed by the Natural Science Museum which was free (most of the museums are) and the medieval old town.

On Sunday we visited the Basque Railway Museum in Azpeitia. Although no trains were running, the site offers an excellent insight into the region's railway history and engineering. The museum occupies the former Azpeitia terminus of the Urola railway, a metre-gauge line opened in 1926 and notable as one of the earliest electrified railways in Spain. Built to connect the Urola valley with the wider network at Zumarraga, it played an important role in passenger and freight traffic until its closure in the late 1970s.

Today, the collection brings that story to life, with an impressive range of Basque narrow and broad-gauge rolling stock including steam, electric and diesel traction, along with period coaching stock, wagons, trams and infrastructure. The retained workshops, permanent-way equipment, signalling and depot fittings give valuable context to how the Urola and other Basque lines were operated and maintained, making it a rewarding visit for anyone interested in the technical and operational side of railway history.
