I usually take photos of this square looking towards the church, but the other corner with the Hotel Neri cafe is just as pretty!

Which is your favourite view?

I donate food once a month to support Esperança, a community project which provides food and supplies for homeless people in Barcelona.

Summer is also the time when they need more help as a lot of regular volunteers are away on vacation, so if you've been thinking about volunteering in Barcelona, now is the perfect time!

You can make a donation or volunteer here, by providing food or your time: https://esperancabarcelona.com/

You can learn more about the organisation and my experience volunteering with Esperança here: https://whattodoinbarcelona.com/volunteer-in-barcelona-with-esperanca-barcelona/

Are you visiting Barcelona this August?

August is probably my least favourite time to be in Barcelona as it is hot and busy, but the Gracia Festival and plenty more going on can make it a fun time to come if you're prepared for the heat!

I heard a fun legend/myth about the lions on the statue of Columbus the other day - that the lions facing Montjuic and the old Citadel (what is now Ciutadella Park) are standing in defensive or battle positions, ready to defend the city from enemies, whereas the lions facing the city and the water are more relaxed.

I admit I haven't walked around the statue since then to check, but I like the idea of it.

Especially with the reading I've been doing lately about the War of Spanish Succession and the building of the Citadel to both defend the city and control the citizens.

Are the lions defending Barcelona from external attackers, or from hostile forces who were in control of the city at the time? Or maybe it's a coincidence...

Casa Vicens was Antoni Gaudí's first masterpiece and has a unique design that incorporates Moorish and Oriental influences.

It is still one of the hidden gems in Barcelona that many visitors skip, preferring to stay with the more famous Gaudí houses, but don't miss this wonderful place!

Completed in 1888, Casa Vicens is a unique building in Barcelona and has a striking façade covered with colourful ceramic tiles and intricate wrought-iron balconies, showcasing Gaudí's fascination with natural forms and ornamentation.

The interior of Casa Vicens is equally impressive, with richly decorated rooms that reflect the eclectic tastes of its original owner. The house also has lush gardens with some great photo opportunities and a rooftop terrace.

If you like modern art, the MOCO Museum as a fun and accessible way to enjoy modern and contemporary art in Barcelona.

With original works by Banksy, Basquiat, Robbie Williams, Kaws, Damien Hirst, Salvador Dali, and many more, there is something for everyone here!

The collection had changed since my last visit, with pieces sometimes moving between here the other MOCO museums in Amsterdam and London, or being switched out with new or different works.

Do you visit art museums when you travel? Or in your own city?

I usually prefer to find museums that are unique to that location, with more focus on local history, culture or art, but it's nice to have a change of pace. And it's a great way to let museum sceptics dabble in something fun and thought provoking that they might not have seen in museums before!!

Feeling the heat? 🥵

If you buy a fan before you come to Barcelona (or live here and want to get one!), I highly recommend this rechargeable neck fan. I recently bought one after a recommendation from a friend and I love it!

Having a constant flow of air on my neck and head really is a game-changer, and I’m not constantly flapping a fan all day. And if you buy using this link I'll get a small commission! 🥳

This I want to highlight one of my favourite traditional shops in El Born.

La Campan .barcelona makes delicious torrons (nougat), ice cream, orxata, and other sweet treats.

They are an emblematic business, which means they have been operating for more than 100 years (since 1890 in fact), and La Campana is now women-run, by the third and fourth generation of the family.

It's a great place for an ice-cream or to buy souvenirs, gifts and sweets for any occasion.

This was torron flavour ice cream, and I was very happy with my choice!
