Beneath Egypt's Mediterranean coast, divers discovered the ruins of a city once known as Thonis-Heracleion.

Among the finds were colossal statues of Egyptian rulers, more than five meters tall, lying near the remains of an ancient temple.

This wasn't a city built underwater. It was once a major gateway into Egypt.

Researchers believe sinking ground, unstable sediments and rising water contributed to its disappearance.
