The Monastery of Anba Hadra (or „Monastery of Saint Simeon“) is one of the largest and most important ancient Coptic monasteries in Egypt, a resilient architectural masterpiece in the heart of the Aswan desert. ✨ It is located on the west bank of the Nile River in Aswan, atop a high plateau overlooking Elephantine Island. 🏝️ Historically known as the Monastery of Anba Hadra (who lived in the 4th century AD), it was later called the Monastery of Saint Simeon (around the 10th century), and it retains both names to this day.
The monastery was an important spiritual and intellectual center in southern Egypt until the 13th century AD.
The monastery suffered raids and attacks that led to the cessation of monastic life, but it remains a world-renowned tourist and archaeological site, attracting thousands of visitors annually.
