The Bahariya Oasis, located in the
Western Desert of Egypt, is a unique destination that combines Pharaonic and Greco-Roman antiquities with breathtaking natural beauty. Its most important landmarks include the Valley of the Golden Mummies, the Temple of Alexander the Great, the 26th Dynasty tombs, Gebel el-Dest (Mountain of Knowledge), therapeutic sulfur springs, and the Black Desert.
Key Archaeological and Historical Sites:
Valley of the Golden Mummies: One of the most important archaeological discoveries in the region (discovered in 2000), it contains Roman-era tombs with thousands of mummies wearing golden masks.
Temple of Alexander the Great: Built by Alexander the Great in the Bawiti Oasis to commemorate his passage through the area, it dates back to the Greco-Roman period.
Tombs of the 26th Dynasty: Located near the city of Bawiti, these tombs are distinguished by their colorful reliefs, including the tomb of Amenhotep Huy (governor of the oasis).
Ain El-Muftella Temple: Ancient chapels built during the reign of King Ahmose II, dedicated to the Theban Triad (Amun, Mut, and Khonsu).
The Sacred Birds Necropolis: A necropolis dating back to the Late Period and the Greco-Roman era, associated with the worship of the gods Thoth and Horus.
The Roman Triumphal Arch: Archaeological remains that reflect the Roman influence in the area.
Major Tourist and Natural Attractions:
The Black Desert (Gebel El-Ingliz): An area covered with dark volcanic ash, considered one of the best places for safaris and camping.
Gebel El-Dest and El-Maghrafa: Famous geological formations where dinosaur skeletons have been found.
Sulfur and Warm Springs: Found in villages such as Ain Bishmo, these springs are used for therapeutic tourism and for treating skin diseases and rheumatism.
The Bawiti Museum (Golden Mummies): Displays some of the mummies and artifacts discovered in the area.
