This beautiful structure in the center of the courtyard of Muhammad Ali Mosque inside the Citadel of Saladin in Cairo is the mosque’s ablution fountain (Mīḍa’ah), where worshippers performed ablution before prayer.

The fountain is not only a functional place for ablution, but also a beautiful example of Islamic architecture. It features richly decorated marble, elegant columns and arches, and a magnificent wooden canopy covered with intricate geometric and floral designs. A small dome rises above the structure, adding even more beauty to the courtyard.

The ablution fountain occupies a central position in the mosque’s open courtyard, surrounded by elegant arcades and smaller domes. Its design reflects the strong Ottoman architectural influence of Muhammad Ali Mosque, where practical spaces were transformed into remarkable works of art.
