Did you know that the mummy of Yuya is one of the most famous non-royal mummies discovered in Ancient Egypt?

Yuya was a man of great status and influence during the 18th Dynasty. He came from Akhmim and held an important position in the royal court. He was also associated with the worship of the god Min.

Yuya and his wife, Thuya, were the parents of Queen Tiye, the Great Royal Wife of King Amenhotep III. This made Yuya and Thuya important members of the royal family, even though they were not themselves kings or queens.

🔸 Their tomb was discovered in 1905 in the Valley of the Kings (KV46).
🔸 Their mummies were found with an extraordinary collection of coffins, funerary masks, and burial furniture.
🔸 Most remarkably, Yuya’s mummy was found in remarkably well-preserved condition, with his facial features still clearly visible after more than 3,000 years.
🔸 Their tomb and its treasures have provided archaeologists with valuable information about life and funerary beliefs during the New Kingdom.

And the most fascinating part of the story?

Yuya and Thuya were the grandparents of King Akhenaten, making them part of one of the most influential and fascinating families in Ancient Egyptian history.

Wadi El Hitan was once part of a deep sea, where whales swam through its waters millions of years ago. Over time, nature transformed this ancient seafloor into the desert landscape we see today.

This is the skull of one of the whales whose remains were discovered in Wadi El Hitan. Today, it is displayed at the Wadi El Hitan Museum in Fayoum.

At the center of the pectoral is a celestial boat carrying a crescent moon and a disk, symbolizing the moon’s journey across the night sky.

🌸 Look closely at the lotus flowers and buds.
The lotus was an important symbol in ancient Egypt, representing creation, renewal, and rebirth. Its daily opening and closing made it a powerful symbol of the cycle of life.

✨ The necklace combines gold, lapis lazuli, carnelian, faience/glass, and electrum, showing the extraordinary craftsmanship of Egyptian jewelry makers more than 3,300 years ago.

In the heart of Mokattam Mountain in Cairo, you can find one of the most unique and fascinating churches in Egypt — Saint Simon the Tanner Church ⛪️

What makes this place truly special is that the church was not built inside a traditional building. Instead, it was carved directly into the mountain, with the natural rock forming part of its ceiling, walls, and surroundings.

Even more impressive, the rock walls are decorated with huge carvings depicting biblical scenes and stories, while the seating is arranged like a massive amphitheater to accommodate large numbers of worshippers and visitors.

The place is also connected to the story of Saint Simon the Tanner and the Miracle of Moving Mokattam Mountain during the reign of the Fatimid Caliph Al-Muizz li-Din Allah — a story of great importance in Coptic heritage.

A truly different place… and a piece of history you don’t see every day in Cairo. 🇪🇬

🔹 The Colors
Thousands of years later, traces of the original colors can still be seen across the relief, giving us a glimpse of how magnificent ancient Egyptian art once looked in its original form.

🔹 The Carving & Details
Every wing, figure, symbol, and hieroglyph was carefully carved into the stone with remarkable precision.

Imagine the responsibility of the artist…

There was no easy second chance. One wrong strike could permanently damage part of the work.

🔹 The Crowns & Cartouches 👑

Look closely at the crowns worn by the figures.

In ancient Egyptian art, a crown was not simply decoration. It could represent the identity, status, or symbolism of the figure wearing it.

And then there are the cartouches — the distinctive oval frames used especially for royal names, becoming one of the most recognizable features of ancient Egyptian writing.

This is where the true mastery of the ancient Egyptian artist becomes clear.

The artist had to maintain the proportions, balance, symbols, crowns, and inscriptions within a limited space of stone — all with incredible accuracy.

Did You Know?

This beautiful statue, now displayed at the Grand Egyptian Museum, depicts Meryre and his wife Iniuia, seated side by side in a scene that combines social status with a deeply human touch.

Dating back to the 18th Dynasty, the Amarna Period, the statue was carved from painted limestone and was discovered in the tomb of Meryre at Saqqara.

Meryre was an important figure during the reign of King Akhenaten and was connected with the service of the Aten temple at Akhetaten and Memphis. He also held important religious and administrative titles.

One of the most beautiful details is Iniuia’s pose. Her arm is placed behind her husband in a gesture that suggests closeness and affection between the couple.

Meryre is shown wearing two rows of beads, believed to have been royal gifts, reflecting his status and position.

The carefully carved hairstyles, clothing, facial features, and original colors show the incredible attention to detail of ancient Egyptian artists.

One statue… telling a story of status, daily life, and human emotions in Ancient Egypt.
