Rey and Matt are back, because one trip through Ecuador wasn’t enough to knock the Miami out of them.

These two spend their working lives keeping people alive on Miami Beach. Rey is an EMT, and Matt handles beach safety and lifesaving. While the rest of us are complaining because the coffee machine is taking too long, these guys are dealing with actual emergencies involving blood, sirens and tourists who thought six rum drinks counted as hydration.

They work hard, save lives and earn their vacation time. So naturally, they’re spending it riding motorcycles through volcano country instead of lying around a resort listening to somebody’s Bluetooth speaker.

This is their second trip with Ecuador Freedom. They came down last year, rode with us, went home and immediately started figuring out how to do it again.

This year, they’re heading out on our four-day self-guided Avenue of Volcanoes, Quilotoa Loop and Amazon Basin tour. It covers 536 miles through two completely different worlds: the high Andes and the Amazon rainforest. They’ll ride past Cotopaxi, circle Chimborazo, cross remote highland roads, visit the blue-green Quilotoa crater lake and descend from cold mountain country into thick jungle heat.

Along the way, they’ll hit ancient cobblestone roads, small Andean farming communities, hot springs, Baños, the Amazon port town of Misahuallí and jungle trails leading to waterfalls and swimming holes. There’s also canoe travel, a visit with an Amazon community and enough elevation change to make a Florida overpass look like a speed bump.

After four days of motorcycles, volcanoes and jungle, they’re extending the trip to the Galápagos for some diving.

Because when you spend all year rescuing people from the ocean, the perfect vacation is getting back into the ocean voluntarily.

Kamil and Izabela are originally from Poland, now living in Connecticut, and decided their vacation needed fewer lounge chairs and more machinery capable of dragging itself out of a river.

They’re heading out on our 9-day Andes, Amazon & Pacific Tour in a diesel VW Amarok 4x4 fitted with a snorkel, winch and hardened Ironman suspension. It’s the sort of truck that looks at a rough Ecuadorian backroad and asks, “Is that all you’ve got?”

Over the next nine days, they’ll cross Ecuador through high Andean passes, twisting cloudforest roads, Pacific beaches, tropical farmland and the steamy Amazon Basin. The route covers roughly 1,455 kilometers, climbing from sea level to more than 4,400 meters while passing through an absurd number of climates for a country this compact.

Along the way, they’ll visit the Equator, explore Mindo’s cloudforest and chocolate country, spend a rest day beside the Pacific in Canoa, see Quilotoa Crater Lake, pass beneath Chimborazo, soak in the volcanic baths of Baños and finish deep in the Amazon near Puerto Misahuallí—with jungle excursions, a motorized canoe ride and the Napo River thrown into the deal.

Everything is laid out for them, including the route, accommodations and the worthwhile stops most travelers drive straight past while blindly following whatever nonsense their phone suggests.

Nine days. Andes, Amazon and Pacific. One heavily equipped diesel 4x4 and no wasted vacation time.

You’re riding along a dirt road in Ecuador, feeling like a proper international adventurer, when the jungle drops what looks like a living radiator hose across your path.

These giant earthworms belong to tropical South American groups that include the Glossoscolecidae family. Some species spend most of their lives deep underground and come crawling to the surface after heavy rain saturates the soil and reduces the oxygen in their burrows.

They may look like something rejected from a low-budget monster movie, but they do serious work. Earthworms eat decomposing organic matter, move nutrients through the soil and dig channels that allow water and air to reach plant roots. Basically, this enormous pink beast is doing more useful infrastructure work than plenty of government departments.

This one was found stretched across the Hummingbird road near Mindo on the western banks of the Andes, not far from Quito - apparently on its way to terrorize a small village.

Just another perfectly normal day of riding in Ecuador.

Lien and Jonas are trading Belgium for two wheels, thin mountain air and one unforgettable ride through the Ecuadorian Andes.

Lien is Ecuadorian, her mother is Belgian, and now she and Jonas are heading out together on our Yamaha Ténéré 700 to tackle Ecuador’s legendary Quilotoa Loop.

They booked at the last minute, but our crew got to work and fitted them both with riding jackets, pants and boots. No fuss and no fashion parade—just proper gear, a properly prepared motorcycle and a route worth getting excited about.

Over the next two days, they’ll cover roughly 363 kilometers of twisting Andean roads, deep canyons, traditional highland villages and wild volcanic country. The big prize is Quilotoa Crater Lake, sitting more than 12,000 feet above sea level inside the caldera of an ancient volcano.

Along the way, they’ll ride through places like Sigchos and Chugchilán, pass beneath the towering peaks of Cotopaxi and the Illinizas, and spend the night on a working organic farm, with dinner included.

Their programmed GPS and detailed route information will handle the navigation. Their job is to ride the Ténéré, breathe in the Andes and come back with dirty boots, tired faces and a pile of stories.

Anthony, Stefan and Christian came over from London and Dubai, started their Ecuador adventure in the Galápagos, then swapped boats and wildlife trails for three properly equipped adventure motorcycles.

They took our four-day Avenue of Volcanoes, Quilotoa Loop & Amazon Basin route and compressed it into three days, which meant one seriously long day in the saddle. They handled it brilliantly and kept the pace moving from the high Andes all the way down into the Amazon Basin.

The route runs south from Quito beneath Ecuador’s great volcanoes, winds through the Quilotoa Loop and past the blue-green waters of Quilotoa Crater Lake, then drops out of the cold mountain air into the thick tropical landscape of the Amazon.

Along the way, riders can enjoy jungle walks, rafting, kayaking, swimming, caves, volcanic hot springs and a motorised canoe trip with a local Amazon guide. The nights are spent in comfortable, character-filled B&Bs and a quality jungle lodge, with proper Ecuadorian food waiting after a full day on the bikes.

The motorcycles, programmed GPS routes, daily route information and 24-hour local support are all sorted before departure, so riders can get on with the important bit: riding some of the best roads and backroads in Ecuador.

Peter and Kevin brought their sons, Brody and William, down from Denver to celebrate years of hard work and great grades with four days of motorcycles, mountain roads, dust, mud, laughs, and a proper Ecuadorian adventure.

Now they’re back, and these photos tell the story better than any report card ever could.

The two dads and their boys rode through the Ecuadorian Andes on our 4-Day Off Road Ecuador Excursion, following remote mountain roads, tackling challenging sections, meeting local people, and getting a look at Ecuador far beyond the usual tourist stops.

There were tough climbs, dirty bikes, tired arms, a few harmless spills, and plenty of moments that will grow into family legends with every retelling.

Andy led the crew through the backroads, kept everyone moving, and continued confusing Ecuadorians by casually dropping local expressions like “Achachay!” in remote mountain villages. Nothing wakes up a quiet Andean town quite like a young Canadian speaking like somebody’s long-lost Ecuadorian cousin.

Brody and William earned this trip through hard work, but the real reward was sharing it with their dads. Years from now, the grades may blur together. These roads, these photos, and the stories from four days riding across Ecuador will stick around.

Congratulations, boys. You earned every dusty mile.

Aleksandra and Dominik came all the way from Poland to see the wild side of Ecuador without wasting half their trip hunting for the good roads.
