Peru cycle tour #23. Peru is a country full of contrasts. We start the day in a typical Peruvian market stall in Oyon where the locals get their breakfast. Then we were collected in a minivan and driven to Lima.
In the evening we visit Locomar which is a very modern area of Lima overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Full of modern shops and restaurants and a lot for us to take in after 3 weeks in the mountains.

Peru cycle tour #22. Our final day cycling in Peru and the best has been saved until last. We started the day on a beautiful wild camp even though it was a very cold place to camp. We started a little later than usual so the frost inside the tent could thaw and we also took the opportunity to wash the dust of the bikes.
Then it was time to get on the road to climb up to the highest we have ever climbed on a bike - 4840 meters in altitude. Once again the thin air made the climb challenging.
Then after lunch it was time for a 25km descent in the most spectacular mountain scenery we have ever cycled through. I hope this movie can do this magnificent scenery justice.
We arrived at our final destination Oyon by late afternoon and enjoyed a celebratory orange juice in our final plaza de armas on this trip.
Tomorrow we will be driven by minivan from the high mountain town of Oyon and back to Lima.

Peru cycle tour #21. We now have 2 days remaining to cycle the high mountain road between Cajatambo and Oyon. After a day of rest we left the festive town of Cajatambo feeling re-energised. We started the climb from 3300m to a pass of 4500m. The road is currently closed to motor vehicles due to roadworks which allowed us to cycle on completely empty roads apart from Alpacas and other animals we saw along the road. The mountain scenery was beautiful as we climbed higher. After cycling over the 4500m pass we found a nice wild camp spot near a stream. We camped next to a couple from Germany and spent the evening talking to them about cycling adventures around the world. As the sun went down it became extremely cold with frost on the inside of our outer tent.
Tomorrow we will have our last day on the bikes and continue to climb to the second pass and our highest altitude ever at 4840m.

We have now finished our last day cycling in Peru and have arrived in the town of Oyon. We saved the best until last as we broke our previous record and cycled over our highest mountain pass ever today at 4840 meters in altitude. The movies from the last few days will be posted soon.
Tomorrow we will take a minibus back to Lima where we will pack the bikes back in their boxes ready for the flight back home on Wednesday.

Peru cycle tour #20. Today we took a day off the bikes and enjoyed the Peruvian festivities that are taking place here. We were undecided at first as to whether we should stay in Cajatambo or continue cycling. However, after we were invited to lunch at the owner of our hotels house, we decided to not miss an opportunity and stay here.
It turned out to be an interesting experience and opportunity for us to rest an take in the carnival atmosphere in the town.
The music started at 6.30am and is still continuing as we are soon trying to get some sleep.
Tomorrow we are back on the bikes and climbing once again over 4500m to a very high altitude wild camp spot. The following day we will continue over our highest pass of this trip at 4800m and arriving at our final destination - Oyon. From there we will take a minivan back to Lima on Monday.

Peru cycle tour #19. We started the day with a nice breakfast outside the thermal baths. Then it was time to get the bikes rolling steadily up the mountain. A climb of 1200 meters in altitude until we arrived in the town of Cajatambo. A town we found full of festival atmosphere as people from all over Peru come here to celebrate.

Peru cycle tour #18
We started the day in the high mountain village of Llipa and back to the local family for breakfast. Another great experience.
Then back on the bikes for a huge descent deep into the canyon and following the river to our lowest altitude on this trip at 1300m.
Here the terrain was dry, baron and very warm. Just like a desert.
We ate lunch in an abandoned village of Canon before starting to climb again. Here we found a perfect new tarmac road and with tail winds we were nearly pushed up through a gorge with dramatic cliffs on either side.
We finished the day back at an altitude of 2200m at a natural warm spring. Here we could take a bath at 40 degrees that felt like heaven for our tired muscles. We were given permission to camp here and tomorrow we continue the climb to a town called Cajatambo. We will continue climbing over the next few days to the highest altitude on this trip of 4800m.

Peru cycle tour #17. Today we enjoyed a breakfast with great views over the mountains in our cow field camp. While packing away the cows came down to visit us. They were calm and just curious to what was going on in their field.
We thought the cycling would be easy and mainly down hill but we also had two climbs. One of 500m up and the next of 200m up.
The road was dramatic with high falls at the side of the track.
The highlight of the day though was the evening. We stayed in the high mountain village of Llipa. We found a room to sleep in the town hall building. There are no restaurants in this town but we told if we knocked of the door of a lady in the town then she would make us some food. This turned out to be a great experience.
Tomorrow we continue to descend to 1300m before climbing up again heading for Cajatambo.

Peru cycle tour #16. To we left our wild camp and set off on the Peru divide. The Peru divide is a cycle route that runs north to south through the Andes mountains in Peru. It starts in Huaraz but we are picking it up in Conococha.
It started with a wonderful ride on the high plains before we started to descend with the Cordillera Huayhuash as the background. The track was extremely quiet. We stopped in the village of Ticllos for lunch before finding a wild camp in a cow field overlooking the mountains and a small village.

We have just had two exciting and challenging days on the Peru divide. There is not much internet up here in the mountains so we can’t upload any movies at the moment. Will do so as soon as we find a good internet connection.
We are now currently in a very small village high up in the mountains called Llipa. Tomorrow we head for Cajatambo.
