At the playback station for Jacob Collier’s 2025 world tour, Toby Burrow utilized four MacBook Pro laptops running Ableton Live. Two were dedicated to redundant backing tracks and timecode, while the other two handled redundant processing for effect plugins, virtual instruments, and samples.

The setup was managed by a pair of Core 256 units, sharing Dante and Thunderbolt connectivity via DADLink. Thunderbolt provided low-latency performance for keyboards and drum samples, while DVS handled tracks and timecode. Both keys and playback featured independent, sample-accurate failover; the keys failover was linked to the playback system, ensuring simultaneous switching in the event of a failure.

Simply put, any component in the chain could be removed without interrupting the audio output! 😎👌

Playback engineer, Tim Rose, has a triple-redundant system of three Core 256s in his rack with Backstreet Boys, as the five singers are performing without musicians on the Sphere dates.

About 400 tracks in Ableton are bused down to 105 audio outputs, and the playback setup is hosted on several maxed-out Apple Mac mini M4 Pro computers.

As Tim puts it: “They keep reminding me in my camp that I’m the heartbeat of the show.”

New Rack Mount for Core 256!

Core 256 can now be mounted in our new 19” 1U DAD rack bracket. The bracket can be assembled for holding one or two Core 256 units and installed with Rear Rail Brackets if attachment is required in a rack with rear-mounted nut bars.

Quite simply, this mounting system provides a compact solution for mounting one Core 256 in a rack or to have two Core 256 units side by side in redundant computer-based playback or effects-processing applications.
