I don't know if any boomerang words even exist in Danish, and this is not my area of expertise by any means. But wouldn't it be so fun if one of the English words infiltrating the Danish language actually was originally Old Norse. Like a homecoming instead 😄

🥧 Whether or not you can say rødgrød med fløde, you can eat it, in pie form now 😃

We tilflyttere often get asked to "say rødgrød med fløde!" but what else is hard to say in Danish? -- wants a challenge, so help her out 🤓

I personally think my Danish pronunciation would probably be better with a mouthful of pie 😏 so I will be back soon!

🥧 Gud, these pies are fantastiske! Erin and her team are having a whole week of Danish desserts turned into pies - from June 1-7 - koldskål, rødgrød med fløde, gammeldags æblekage, hindbærsnitte, rhubarb crumble and drømmekage cheesecake.

I stopped by to hear about them and share some little tidbits I learned about their history 🧐 ...and taste test! It's good to have as a friend! 💕

Today's video is about koldskål - cold bowl ❄️🥣 - a classic summery Danish dessert or snack.

But did you know that originally koldskål didn't contain ANY buttermilk? It was made of BEER, rye bread, brandy or rum and spices? It wasn't until after buttermilk became approved for people to drink that Danes started using that.

🍪 So...the burning question: Are you a crushed or whole kammerjunkere aficionado???

Det er en ommer! That's a re-do!

Det er en forbier! That's a miss!

Two nouns in Danish formed by an adverb (om, forbi) plus the ending -er.

This is a pretty rare formulation in Danish for nouns, but you can see other words like ''en griner'' formed by verbs plus an -er ending. 

Can you think of others? 

I love learning new expressions like this - and I hope they help you out if you're learning or give you a little glimpse into the fun idiosyncrasies of Danish if you speak it every day.

Rabarber - den smager af dansk sommer 🌿

I love baking but never tried to make anything with rhubarb before moving to Denmark. There are areas of the US where people grow and bake with it for sure, it was just not part of my story.

All that changes when you've got a rabarber-pusher!

Strawberry-rhubarb is one of my favorite combos - with just a little lemon juice and zest. Gosh my mouth is watering just writing this! What else should I try?

It's one theory anyways! And it helps me remember bøgetræ = beech tree 🌿

Bog/bøger (books/books) and bøg/bøger (beech tree/s) both stem from Old Norse bōk (Old English boc), which was the old word for bøg - beech tree...
..Because people used to write on beech tree tablets ✍️

I had always wondered why bøger and bøge were so close, so it makes sense to me as a theory. Another theory is that "book" is derived from Sanskrit, at least in English. Bog and book seem so close though, I want to believe!

Jeg har sagt det 117 gange! I went down this rabbit hole after reading 'til syvende og sidst.' I'm sure there are many more number expressions in Danish. Some with meaning, others maybe not so much! Please share away!

I guess learning on apps will do that to you!🦉😭 Even though I feel fairly fluent most days, there are really basic things I get wrong because I never learned them properly.

Det var en meget speciel oplevelse at være med til én 💞 tak for invitationen og fordi vi kunne være en del af dagen. Oplevelsen fik mig til at tænke meget på traditionen og kulturen generelt og jeg kan ikke få det klaret i 3 min på Instagram. Men tak fordi du ser med og tak fordi jeg måtte øve mig dansk med jer.
