โ— LO and behold, without much fanfare, it's back! ๐Ÿฅณ Besides saving you from EUR 20 and up, one feels borderline valued as a frequent traveler in *Alliance

โ— What LO is also rather quiet about is that most tickets, also Eco Saver, can be cancelled and fully refunded 24 hours after booking: When asked, their agents won't say it applies to each and every ticket type, but we've not come across one that couldn't yet ๐ŸŽซ

Many moons ago, we had the idea of creating a ranking of frequent flyer programmes. In part, we'd find it difficult to do - lot of variables involved and how to baseline? - and we simply got distracted by life going on ๐Ÿ“ˆ๐Ÿ“Š๐Ÿ“‰. As a place to start, can our dear followers list the biggest improvements and shortcomings you've noticed about EuroBonus? Here's a start, assuming Gold or Diamond-status or wanting to have it:

- The massive earning devaluation of October 2018 (following the early 2015 slaughter)

- StarAlliance flights no longer count towards status by number of flights, but only by points earned on these (i.e. the 45 flights for Gold have to be earned on SAS/Widerรธe flight, 90 for Diamond)

+ Priority boarding for family or group members of Gold or Diamond-members

+ Free wifi for Gold or Diamond-members

This primarily goes out to the Norwegian readers, though something similar is underway in other countries

โ— Point earnings through work-related have long been subject to taxation in Norway, yet now the burden falls on the employer to report to the tax man
โ— Most employers will disallow employees to earn points as it is administratively heavy and near-impossible to account for accurately
โ— In effect though, neither the employer nor the tax authorities are able to monitor if you earn points or not
โ— The very last thing SAS and EuroBonus will do is to share customer points earning data with employers and tax authorities
โ— So, the law in newest form is in reality unenforceable and there no hindrance to keep earning points and status

As for EuroBonus and SAS, this could sting:
โ— If a significant part of employees stop claiming points they'll be less likely to chose SAS for work and private travel
โ— Go/GoLight tickets earn so few points they don't command much loyalty which just worsens the effect of the previous argument

EuroBonus recently opened up to what's commonly known as family or household accounts called Point Sharing. With this short article, we want to highlight that as for EBX, Point Sharing:

- Will do nothing for your status, so don't get your hopes up. You can't get others to earn you status-earning Basic Points. If you as Diamond want to hand out a Gold card, Point Sharing makes no difference.

In the devalued barren desert that EuroBonus has become, it's a small cheer to see:

+ You can create a group of up to 8 and any EuroBonus member can join the group.
+ All points of the Point Sharing group members will go into the same bucket.
+ This is far more liberal than, say, Qatar Privilege Club (Qmiles) which demands proof that you're fiancee is actually living at the same address and the like.
+ You can hover up smaller amounts of points from your uncle who rarely travels and who's points expire soon anyway, see though also below.

Have these things in mind when entering Point Sharing:

~ Someone has to be Point Sharing group owner and let others into the group. All members can spend, but the owner can restrict who spends. Within your circle of friends or in the family, get out there and propose Point Sharing first before someone annoying and clueless does.
~ Curious to see how a merry bunch of friends innocently goes into this without some handshake on how to spend points and once a critical mass of points have been earned, starts bickering about who gets that first award ticket...

On Monday Oct. 1 SAS very unceremoniously overhauled the earning chart for EuroBonus points on SAS flights - it's quite a punch in the gut especially for economy fares. Devaluations are bound to happen with loyalty programmes, but this is a particularly focused and severe one. In broad strokes, the main changes are:

โ— Point earning in the previously most point-profitable Go and Go Light (economy and carry-on only economy) to/from USA and Asia have been reduced down to about 5%. So, whereas ARN-LAX-ARN could have earned you 9.000 Basic Points, it could be as little as 480 Basic Points for the same app. โ‚ฌ 500 ticket.

โ— It needs to be looked into whether flying economy on *Alliance may have become as (un)profitable as flying SAS Go or Go Light which would have the - for SAS - bizarre effect of driving potential SAS customers to *Alliance economy if price is the only difference.

โ— For point earning in Go in the Nordics and Europe, the drop is for Go Light only. That's partial relief and Go and Go Light tickets were never the best point-per-EUR-spent anyway.

Tickets booked prior to October 1, will earn as usual for flights taken before December 1. Regardless of when booked, after December 1 earnings will be under the new reduced earning rules.

One could muse the new earning rules correlate point earnings more closely with fare prices, but this is obviously little comfort and SAS' steathly tactics don't leave us with a warm and fuzzy feeling. Taken altogether this leads us to recommend a shift in strategy for the fastest way to EBX.
