80% less water used per trip? Yes, that’s the water savings IFCO Reusable Packaging Containers (RPCs) generate when compared to single-use packaging alternatives. 💧

On World Water Day, we’re reminded that every drop counts. At IFCO, we don’t just save water - we prioritize smarter ways to use it. Our state-of-the-art wash centers minimize fresh water use through advanced water-recycling technology - maximizing efficiency while ensuring the highest hygiene standards.

But we know we can do more. That’s why we launched the IFCO Water Stewardship Program - a global initiative focused on optimizing water conservation, driving responsible resource management, and setting industry benchmarks for sustainable water use.

In 2024 alone, by choosing IFCO RPCs, our customers helped save:
✅ 54,308 megaliters of water – the equivalent of 21,723 Olympic-sized swimming pools 🏊‍♂️

2.4 billion – that’s the number of times that fresh grocery products took a trip in one of our reusable packaging containers. And that’s just in North America and Europe!

With each trip, together with our customers, we significantly reduced carbon emissions in the global fresh grocery supply chain, as well as packaging and food waste, water consumption and energy use.

To mark this milestone, we’ll be awarding our customers with an IFCO Sustainability Certificate. Peer-reviewed life cycle assessments help us quantify the environmental savings achieved with the IFCO SmartCycle circular pooling system for reusable packaging solutions. Every certificate is therefore a science-backed account of each customer’s unique contributions to a greener future. 📜♻️

This is the 8th year in a row that we’ve issued these awards. Over the years, this certificate has become a popular and useful tool. Why? It’s a precise and concise way for our customers to demonstrate real commitment to improving the environmental performance of their own supply chains. It’s also proof of the tangible progress they are making toward their ambitious sustainability goals.

METRO makes major sustainability gains with IFCO! 🌱

METRO, a leading food and pharmacy retailer in Québec and Ontario, is taking meaningful action to reduce single-use transport packaging—and they’re seeing real results.

By integrating IFCO RPC's into their Ontario produce supply chain, METRO has already helped eliminate an estimated 103 metric tons of single-use packaging in just one year. That’s nearly 276,000 RPCs replacing cardboard, corrugated polypropylene, and other wasteful packaging.

This is what circularity in action looks like!

Recently our Project Management Office (PMO) team had the privilege of volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House in Munich, preparing a three-course meal for around 20 families staying there.

The Ronald McDonald House provides a home away from home for families navigating incredibly challenging times, offering them comfort and support while their children receive medical treatment at a nearby clinic.

Our team was deeply moved by the resilience and gratitude of these families. Sharing a meal and a moment of warmth with them was a truly meaningful experience.

ESG Knowledge Bits: What is Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)? 🔁

Sustainability isn’t just about what we do. It is also about how we measure impact. That’s where Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) comes in.

LCA is a method used to evaluate a product’s environmental impact across its entire life cycle. It cover everything from raw material sourcing to disposal or recycling.

What questions can LCA answer?
✅ What difference would it make to increase the proportion of recycled content in reusable packaging?
✅ What impact would a more resource-efficient cleaning process have?
✅ What design changes could extend service life?
✅ How would using renewable energy affect a product’s carbon footprint?
✅ How could the recycling process be improved?
✅ What should be prioritized to reduce the environmental impact of production, use, and recycling?
✅ How do two similar products or services compare in terms of their environmental footprint?

At IFCO, we use LCA to continuously improve our reusable packaging solutions. Our research shows that IFCO RPCs generate up to 62% less CO₂e compared to single-use packaging, reinforcing our commitment to circularity and a low-carbon future.
