January is over, first trade fair visited ✅

Our CEO attended Kloakmessen in Fredericia and returned with many inspiring impressions. 🇩🇰

The fair once again proved to be an important meeting point for the sewer and drainage industry, offering valuable insights into current trends, innovative solutions and future developments.

The 64th Slovenian Foundry Conference (DLS), held in September 2024 in Portorož, was once again a key event for the international foundry community for our wonderful team from LIGO and ZÜRN. 🇸🇮🏭
Experts, scientists, and industry professionals from various countries gathered to discuss the latest technological advancements and challenges in the foundry sector.

This year’s conference focused on several critical topics, including:
- Circular economy and sustainable innovations in the foundry industry
- Advances in casting alloys and new material solutions
- Automation and artificial intelligence in production processes
- Energy efficiency and reducing the carbon footprint in foundry operations

The accompanying exhibition provided an excellent opportunity to explore cutting-edge technologies and products from leading companies in the sector. Participants were able to gain valuable insights into the future of foundry technology through these innovative solutions.

Networking played a crucial role at the conference, fostering the exchange of knowledge between academia and industry. Once again, the picturesque coastal town of Portorož proved to be the perfect venue, offering a relaxed and inspiring setting for the sharing of expertise.

Cast Iron at the ZÜRN Group 🔥

Our foundries produce nodular cast iron components and ductile cast iron components from 0.1 to 200 kg in the materials EN-GJL 150 to EN-GJS-700, as well as in various special alloys for a wide range of renowned customers in Europe and worldwide. Coreless and core intensive castings are manufactured in high processing times. The modern and flexible production enables us to manufacture medium and large series in particular.

What is cast iron? 🔥

Iron (Fe) accounts for more than 95% of the alloy material, while the main alloying elements are carbon (C) and silicon (Si). The amount of carbon in cast irons is 2.1 - 4%, while ferrous alloys with less carbon are denoted as carbon steel by definition. Cast irons contain appreciable amounts of silicon, normally 1 - 3%, and consequently these alloys should be considered ternary Fe-C-Si alloys. 🔬

Production
Cast iron is made by remelting pig iron, often along with substantial quantities of scrap iron and scrap steel, and taking various steps to remove undesirable contaminants such as phosphorus and sulfur. Depending on the application, carbon and silicon content are reduced to the desired levels, which may be anywhere from 2% to 3.5% and 1% to 3% respectively. Other elements are then added to the melt before the final form is produced by casting.
Iron is most commonly melted in a small blast furnace known as a cupola (see blast furnace for more details). After melting is complete, the molten iron is removed or ladled from the forehearth of the blast furnace. This process was devised by the Chinese, whose innovative ideas revolutionized the field of metallurgy. Previously, iron was melted in an air furnace, which is a type of reverberatory furnace.*

What is actually casting❓

The ZÜRN Group has broad expertise in the field of cast components. 🔥
Casting is a 6,000-year-old injection molding process in which a liquid material is filled into a mold of the desired shape. The liquid cools and gradually solidifies. The solidified part is called casting. It is either ejected or broken out of the mold to complete the process. Metals or cold-hardening materials such as epoxy, concrete, plaster or clay are usually used in casting. Casting is the preferred process for producing complex shapes that would otherwise be too difficult or costly to produce by other methods. A frog cast from copper is the oldest existing evidence that intricate casting patterns were used as early as about 3200 BC.* ⏳

District heating - What is it? ♨️
District heating is the supply of buildings with space heating and often also with hot water, which is fed directly into the connected residential buildings through mostly underground, insulated pipelines. District heating customers therefore do not need their own heating system in the house. Energy sources such as fossil fuels (oil, natural gas), biomass, waste or industrial waste heat and, increasingly, renewable energy sources are used to generate the heat. District heating is usually produced in combined heat and power plants.

This year we again participated in the family business summit, the Sympownium of . Important topics such as the current economic crisis, the war on Europe's doorstep, the melting pot in Asia and about Europe's position and what responsible ownership means in relation to family businesses were discussed. The insight and honesty at this event can help us family businesses and family entrepreneurs to step outside our own comfort zone and look at new things. Our key learnings are that without sustainability efforts we will not survive for long, as well as looking at ourselves as Europe as a community. 🌍🤝💙

After five eventful days of the fair, GIFA, METEC, THERMPROCESS and NEWCAST have clearly exceeded expectations. 63,300 visitors from 114 countries (58% of them decision-makers) traveled to the Bright World of Metals in Düsseldorf. Around 2,200 exhibitors from 56 countries presented the power of the metal industry and provided impetus for the future with their machines, systems and solutions. Sustainability and artificial intelligence were hotly discussed topics in the twelve pavilions of the four most important trade fairs in the world. 👏🏻🌎

Investments, even in difficult times of the global economy, spontaneous successful deals and an intensive exchange between all those involved shaped the dynamic atmosphere on the entire exhibition grounds. 🗣️

78% of visitors are planning a specific investment in the next two years.
