How Serena sees and painted me ⭐️. Through my work with Female Places, something beautiful happened: Serena noticed what I was creating. She is an illustrator and artist living not far from Pordenone in Friuli Venezia Giulia. We spent an inspiring day together in Pordenone; she showed me her favourite places, and we could have talked for hours, imagining ideas and products for .places

Some time after our meeting, Serena shared a drawing of me. Today, I feel ready to show it. In her post, she described what inspires her about Female Places and mentioned my Trieste guide for solo travellers (see link in bio) again. She understood that I did not create it to make money, but because it came from the heart.

One year after publishing my little guide, I understand even more clearly where the heart of Female Places beats: it wants to connect women with warm and welcoming hosts, to create moments where something real happens and hearts beat a little faster because of genuine connection.

Ready for an 8-day road trip in Friuli Venezia Giulia?
Here’s my personal itinerary for women travelling solo by car. I stayed in some places myself, others were trusted tips. 
You can follow this route in both directions – start in Trieste or come down from Villach. 
No need to change hotels every night. Just drive, explore, and take your time.

1. Venzone – 2 to 3 nights
🏡 Casa Bliss with Pierina – warm, quiet, and close to the Tagliamento river. Mention Female Places for a discount: [email protected]. 
🌿 Walk through Venzone, Gemona, or take a detour to Val Resia for deep nature.  
🚴‍♀️ Ride a stretch of the Alpe Adria Cycle Path (Venzone–Udine, 55 km). You can return by train with your bike.  
⛰ Optional: Stop at Monte Lussari for breathtaking Alpine views.

2. Tarcento – 2 nights
🏡 Villa de Rubeis Florit – a romantic Venetian villa  
🌿 Great base for San Daniele, Spilimbergo and Udine. A place to slow down.  
Optional mountain stop: Sauris – 1 or 2 nights
🏡 Garni Plueme – calm and scenic.
🌿 Rest by the lake, enjoy local ham and beer, or go hiking.

3. Gorizia – 2 nights
🏡 Hotel Trieste in Gradisca d’Isonzo - boutique style, run by two sisters.  
🌿 Gorizia & Nova Gorica (Slovenia) are European Capital of Culture 2025 (GO! 2025). Visit the castle, cafés and cultural spaces.  
🍷 Don’t miss Collio/Brda. For hikes, I love the Slovenian side: Šmartno is a gem.

4. Trieste – 2 nights
🏡 Forvm Boutique Hotel, elegant and central.  
🌿 Stroll through the city, visit Miramare, Duino (Rilke trail), Grado and Aquileia.  
End your journey by the sea.

Rainy days in Trieste - this is what you can do for an unforgettable day.

I’ve spent more than a few rainy days in Trieste. We are not in Sicily here.

That’s why I’ve put together this guide: places where it feels good to be a woman on her own.

Cosy cafés with quiet corners, museums where time slows down, shops full of unique treasures and a pub where you never quite feel like a stranger.

This is about the real, everyday stuff that makes me book a trip alone as a woman – especially now, being 45.

Over the past years, I’ve been inspired by some amazing women who speak openly about this phase of life – about hormones, energy levels, mindset, self-care, and what it means to feel good in your own skin again.

And for me, part of that has been solo travel.
