Building the future of energy – one shipment at a time.

Since 2016, SAL – today part of the JSI Alliance – has been supporting the construction of one of the world’s most ambitious scientific projects: ITER, the international Fusion For Energy research facility currently being built in Southern France.

Over the past decade, our teams have transported a wide range of highly complex and oversized components from around the world, including transformers from China, reactor components weighing up to 600 tonnes from Italy, Japan and South Korea, cryostat tank sections, assembly tools and large steel structures essential to the project.

ITER aims to demonstrate the viability of nuclear fusion – the same process that powers the sun – as a future source of safe, low-carbon energy. Bringing together partners from around the world, it is one of the largest international scientific collaborations ever undertaken.

We are proud to contribute our heavy lift and project cargo expertise to a project that could help shape the future of global energy generation.

What does it take to prepare a new vessel for her first voyage?

Preparing a vessel for service is about more than technical readiness and compliance.

It is also about creating an environment where crews can live, work and perform at their best.

Shortly before the delivery of MV Patricia, the third vessel in SAL’s next-generation Orca Class, our QS Superintendent Yigit Daysal, spent time onboard in China supporting the vessel’s final preparations.

The programme included crew familiarisation, practical walk-throughs of the deck and engine room, verification of safety equipment readiness, discussions on the ongoing PSC campaign focusing on main deck readiness, the Management Focus Area on enclosed space entry, and crew familiarity with vessel-specific procedures. Lessons learned from across the fleet were also shared.

For us, safety is built through awareness, ownership, preparedness and teamwork. It is also supported by an environment where crews can feel comfortable and perform at their best during their time at sea.

As MV Patricia begins her service, she brings together both operational excellence and a modern onboard living and working environment designed with seafarers in mind.

A big thank you to Yigit, the crew, our onsite teams and all colleagues involved in preparing MV Patricia for safe and successful operations.

We wish MV Patricia and her crew fair winds, following seas and many successful voyages ahead.

With the long-term charter of three Octopus 12.6 class newbuildings, SAL continues to expand its ability to handle complex cargo projects around the world.

The Octopus is known for its versatility, adaptability and ability to navigate challenging environments. The Octopus 12.6 class follows a similar philosophy.

Scheduled for delivery in 2028, these next-generation multipurpose heavy lift vessels were designed by SDARI and combine a large box-shaped cargo hold a combined crane capacity of 500 tonnes, Ice Class 1A notation and a fuel-efficient design. Built to support a wide range of project cargoes and heavy lift operations, they will further strengthen SAL’s ability to deliver reliable, flexible and future-ready transport solutions for customers worldwide.

For us, fleet growth is not simply about adding more vessels. It is about investing in the right capabilities and continuously modernizing our fleet to meet the evolving demands of global project logistics.
