On behalf of Dr. Cai Glushak, President of EURAMI, we would like to draw your urgent attention to the attached EURAMI Alert regarding the current Ebola outbreak affecting the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and South Sudan.
The attached information outlines the serious implications this outbreak may have on international medical transport, medical evacuation and repatriation operations. These include strict travel restrictions, possible refusal of Ebola-related medical evacuations by certain countries, airport rerouting and screening measures, quarantine requirements, and significant operational delays.
In particular, confirmed or suspected Ebola cases will require the highest level of isolation capability, maximum personal protective equipment for crews, and close coordination with aviation authorities, governmental agencies and specialized infectious disease receiving hospitals. The alert also notes that even non-Ebola medical evacuations may be affected where patients present symptoms overlapping with Ebola, such as fever, malaise, diarrhoea or rash.
Given the seriousness of the situation, we kindly ask you to review the attached EURAMI Alert carefully and to take its contents into consideration when planning, assessing or coordinating any medical transport missions to, from, or through the affected regions.
Please also be aware that further restrictions may be introduced at short notice, including limitations on refuelling stops, which may further affect aircraft availability, routing options and operational costs.
EURAMI will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates as necessary.
