Here are haunting things to know:
✨ The site was first a druidic monastery in the 5th century, then a Christian monastery in the 6th century
✨ The first castle was built here in 1209 by the O’Carroll clan
✨ Burnt down in 1922 during the Irish Civil War, rebuilt in 1928, and opened as a hotel in 1994
✨ Kinnitty is part of the “supernatural triangle” of haunted castles in County Offaly, along with Leap and Charleville Forest Castle
✨ The castle has been featured on TV’s Most Haunted and is famously home to the Phantom Monk of Kinnitty — known as “Hugh,” who appears as a solid figure and is often mistaken for a real person. He’s said to predict future events, and a paranormal group even captured what they believe to be his image on camera in 2023 😱
✨ Two of the bedrooms are known to be haunted : the Geraldine Room and the Elizabeth Room. An 11-year-old girl named Emily is also seen falling from the battlements (she disappears before impact)
