I’d also say the UK is overflowing with ghost stories and spooky places, but I’ve never learned of so many ghostly legends within the course of a single trip. It felt like the theme of this whole trip was haunted Ireland - but maybe that’s just Ireland 😅

Glenarm was the seat of the McDonnell clan for nearly 400 years.
One guest described the ghostly woman in 1853 as: “tall, with a careworn face and deep-set eyes, wearing what seemed a short petticoat of blue and brown homespun, her arms extended and holding the strings of a frilled cap such as Irish women used to wear.”

Legend has it that rather than surrender Ross Castle to Cromwell’s forces in 1652, the O’Donoghue chieftain leapt from its highest window into Lough Leane (along with his horse, his table, and his library).
Another legend goes that in the winter of 1639, Dunluce Castle’s sea-facing kitchen collapsed off the cliff mid-dinner service, plunging nine servants into the Atlantic below.
Only one kitchen boy survived, and the souls of the lost staff are said to still cry out from the ruins on stormy nights.
Interestingly, Bram Stoker, the author of Dracula, is said to have often visited Killarney and spent time around Muckross Abbey at night. Could the legend around the Brown Man served some inspiration for the creation of his blood-sucking vampire?! 🤔

There’s also a mysterious photo online with what looks like a female presence in the castle at night - look it up! 👀
