Crew of the Four-Masted Barque Pommern on the Cape Horn Route, 1934

The crew of the four-masted barque Pommern photographed in March 1934 during a voyage toward Cape Horn. The passage around the Horn was among the most demanding routes in the age of commercial sail, notorious for its violent storms, towering seas, and relentless winds. Sailors transporting grain between Australia and Europe regularly faced these harsh conditions as they navigated the southern oceans.

Built in Scotland in 1903, Pommern served for decades as an ocean-going cargo vessel, primarily engaged in the grain trade. Her crew, typically numbering around twenty-six men, lived and worked under difficult conditions, enduring long voyages and the daily challenges of life at sea.
