St. Martin’s Day

November 11 once used to be an important date in the farmers’ calendar to celebrate. It was the last day of farm labourers’ service who got their year’s salary💰. Also, they used to rebook the old or seek new jobs for the following year. Supplies for winter were prepared as the cattle 🐮🐑grazing had ended and wine fermentation🍇 was about to finish.

A legend has it, that St. Martin, a soldier-turned-bishop (316-397 AD) had cut his cloak in half to share with a beggar during a snowstorm🌀, to save him from the cold. November 11 was the day of Martin’s funeral. Since then it has been called his name day.

“St. Martin arrives on a white horse” is a folk saying that refers to a yearlong experience of the first snow arrival on this day. In such case, our ancestors expected a harsh winter❄️ to come. Another one says that geese had disturbed his sermon with gaggling so loud that they all ended up on roasting pans.

Roasted goose🍗served on St. Martin’s Day is a tradition in the Czech Republic. It goes well with potato dumplings, gnocchi or thin flat cakes called lokše. Washed down with a young wine🍷, it makes a delicious part of the autumn feast🍽️.

Maxmilian Brokoff (1688–1731) was one of the great Baroque authors of sandstone sculptures of saints that decorate the Bridge. Today, we commemorate an anniversary 📆of his death.

Děti z dočasného domova na ubytovně SK Meteor a další děti rozmístěné v rámci Prahy 8 se díky němu zúčastní mnoha krásných výletů za zábavou, vzděláním, poznáním kulturního a přírodního bohatství České republiky. Děkujeme všem, kteří se zapojují. ❤ Fotky se společných akcí budeme sdílet. 😊
