Někdy si lidé myslí, že nebe je od nás velmi daleko a že život na zemi je to jediné, na čem opravdu záleží. Proto dávají všechnu svou energii starostem o peníze, práci, pohodlí nebo úspěch, a přitom zapomínají na hlubší smysl života. Dnešní slavnost Nanebevstoupení Páně nám ale připomíná, že jsme stvořeni pro něco většího. Náš skutečný domov není zde. Náš pravý domov je u Boha v nebi.

Když Ježíš vstoupil do nebe, neopustil své učedníky. Šel před námi, aby nám otevřel cestu. Nanebevstoupení není příběh o tom, že Ježíš odešel ze světa. Je to příběh o tom, že v něm lidství vstupuje do nebe. Kam odešel Kristus jako Hlava, tam doufáme dojít i my.

To nám dává naději, zvláště když je život těžký. Mnoho lidí dnes nese různé starosti: rodinné problémy, samotu, nemoc, zklamání, bolest v srdci nebo strach z budoucnosti. Nanebevstoupení nám připomíná, že tyto pozemské těžkosti nejsou poslední kapitolou našeho života. Bůh připravil něco věčného pro ty, kdo zůstávají věrní.

Proto Ježíš neřekl učedníkům, aby jen stáli a dívali se do nebe. Poslal je zpět do světa s posláním: „Vy jste toho svědky.“ Jinými slovy: žijte jinak, odpouštějte, pomáhejte druhým, přinášejte pokoj, zůstávejte věrní, modlete se a milujte i tehdy, když je to těžké.

Jako křesťané máme mít své oči a srdce pozvednuté k nebi, ale naše nohy musí pevně stát na zemi. Nemůžeme utéct před svými povinnostmi ani životními těžkostmi. Pořád máme rodiny, o které se máme starat, práci, kterou máme vykonávat, sousedy, kterým máme pomáhat, a víru, kterou máme každý den žít.

Dobrá zpráva je, že na to nejsme sami. Ježíš zůstává s námi po celé naší životní cestě. Posiluje nás svým slovem, povzbuzuje nás skrze společenství církve a zvláštním způsobem se s námi spojuje v Eucharistii. Každá mše svatá je malým setkáním nebe a země.

Dnešní slavnost Nanebevstoupení nás tedy zve, abychom žili s nadějí. Naděje nám pomáhá vidět za hranice každodenních těžkostí. Naděje nám dává směr a připomíná nám, že nebe je skutečné. Kristus šel před námi. A zatímco putujeme k našemu nebeskému domovu, žijme věrně zde na zemi — s očima upřenýma k nebi a s nohama pevně stojícíma v každodenním křesťanském životě.

Every year, a quiet road connects two places—and many hearts.

This week, pilgrims from Klatovy and Domažlice once again set out on their annual journey to Neukirchen. This pilgrimage is not only a spiritual walk, but also a living memory of history. After the Second World War, many people from this region were forced to leave their homes, and with them they carried what was most precious—their faith. Among these was a statue of the Virgin Mary, which found a new home in Neukirchen beim Heiligen Blut. Since then, this place has become a point of return, remembrance, and prayer.

Pilgrims walk not only with personal intentions—for their families, the sick, and for peace—but also in gratitude and in memory of those who came before them. The journey itself reflects something deeper: faith carried through difficulty, hope preserved across generations, and a quiet trust that God walks with His people even in times of loss.

Step by step, through fields and villages, prayers were spoken, songs were shared, and friendships quietly grew along the way. Pilgrimage reminds us that faith is not only something we believe, but something we live—together, with our whole lives.

Arriving in Neukirchen, tired but grateful, the pilgrims carried not only their intentions, but also a renewed sense of belonging—to God, to one another, and to a history that still speaks today.

April 30 in Czechia: An Evening of Fire, Friendship, and Simple Joy

April 30 here in the Czech Republic carries a very unique spirit. As evening approached, you could already feel the change in the air—wood being gathered, small groups forming, and a quiet anticipation building. Soon the fires were lit, marking the traditional celebration of “pálení čarodějnic,” (burning the witch) and what followed was a beautiful mix of community, culture, and simple joy.

People came together in a very natural way—families, friends, neighbors. There was plenty to eat and drink, from grilled food to local beer, and no one seemed to be in a hurry. Conversations flowed easily, laughter came freely, and even those meeting for the first time felt at home. It was one of those evenings where you realize that community is not something complicated—it is built in these small, shared moments.

What struck me most was how relaxed and genuine everything felt. No pressure, no formality—just people enjoying being together around the fire. Children played nearby, adults shared stories, and as the night grew darker, the warmth of the fire seemed to bring everyone even closer.

Even as a foreigner, I did not feel like an outsider. There is something deeply welcoming in this Czech tradition. It reminded me that joy does not always come from big events, but often from simple gatherings, good food, shared drinks, and open hearts.

April 30 here is more than just a date—it is an experience of togetherness, and one that stays with you long after the fire has gone out.

When a Simple Stick Carries a Message of Life

There is something quietly beautiful about living in a culture that speaks through simple traditions.

Today, I held in my hands what the Czech people call pomlázka—a braided willow whip, decorated with colorful ribbons. At first glance, it may seem like just a handcrafted stick. But behind it lies a story, a meaning, and a way of celebrating life that has been passed down through generations.

On Easter Monday, boys and men gently tap girls with the pomlázka, wishing them health, youth, and freshness for the year ahead. In return, they receive decorated eggs, sweets, or a small drink. It is playful, symbolic, and deeply rooted in the rhythm of spring—a reminder that life is renewed again.

Coming from a different culture, I cannot help but smile at how every people finds its own language to celebrate joy. Just as we have our own ways of gathering, sharing food, and marking special moments back home, here too, faith and culture meet in simple, human gestures.

And perhaps that is the beauty of Easter beyond the church walls: life returns, joy is shared, and even a simple woven branch can carry a message of hope.

Sometimes, to understand a people, you don’t need many words. You only need to hold what they hold… and listen.

Prosím Boha, aby v každém z nás obnovil a znovu roznítil tuto naději. Ať jsme znovu ujištěni, že Bůh je s námi a že projdeme každou temnotou našeho života a budeme zpívat Aleluja. Amen.
