A lot of people ask this question whenever there is a typhoon in China:

“If the typhoon isn’t directly hitting Shenzhen or Hong Kong, why are my air freight shipments still delayed?”

The answer is that aviation doesn’t operate in isolation.

A major typhoon such as Typhoon Dolphin can affect air freight far beyond the area where it makes landfall. Aircraft don’t simply fly in a straight line from one city to another. Flights are constantly rerouted around dangerous weather, airports may reduce operations, air traffic becomes congested, and airlines often cancel or delay flights as a safety precaution. Aircraft and crews that were supposed to operate later flights also end up out of position, creating a domino effect across the network.

Even warehouses that remain open may find cargo waiting because there are fewer available flights or because airlines temporarily prioritise passenger operations and essential cargo.

So even if Shenzhen or Hong Kong experiences only rain and wind while the typhoon strikes somewhere else, your shipment can still be affected.

Safety always comes first. A delayed shipment is frustrating, but it is far better than asking pilots to fly through conditions that put lives, aircraft, and cargo at unnecessary risk.

This is one reason experienced importers always plan ahead and keep enough inventory instead of relying on cargo arriving at the last possible moment. In logistics, weather in one place can create consequences hundreds or even thousands of kilometres away.
