BOOKING EXPRESS FROM A PACKING ESTIMATE IS A COSTLY SHORTCUT
A supplier says the cargo is “12 cartons, 180 kg.” That is not enough
to approve a DHL, UPS or FedEx pickup from China.
For express shipments, the final outer dimensions matter alongside
actual weight. After protective padding, double-wall cartons or
repacking, the number of cartons and the chargeable basis can
change—even when the products do not.
That creates avoidable problems for a US importer:
• the original transport comparison may no longer be valid;
• labels may be prepared against outdated carton data;
• one oversized carton can require a different handling decision;
• multiple suppliers may submit measurements in different formats,
making consolidation harder to control.
Before booking, freeze one final shipment record:
1. carton count;
2. actual gross weight per carton;
3. outer dimensions of every carton;
4. pickup address and cargo-ready date;
5. product description and any handling restrictions.
If several Chinese suppliers are involved, collect those details only
after final packing—not from production estimates. Then compare
express, air freight and ocean freight using the same verified
dataset.
