The 2023 great train race in the NSW Hunter Valley with four steam hauled trains between Waratah, a Newcastle suburb and Maitland, along a quad track section of the Main Northern Railway. The line being closed for the race.

This is a collaboration with , created with our combined footage from onboard 5917’s (Howie) and 6029’s (me!) trains.

The 2023 Great train race was a special celebration as the previous three years the race was cancelled due to Covid & floods, hence the four trains, usually there are only two.

North Strathfield Metro Station update
There was a community engagement event this morning.
Excavation of the station box is almost complete & should be done by Christmas.

The large amount of shale piled up is due to a breakdown of the specialist bucket excavator last week, now replaced & a 2nd one to join shortly.

The TBMs should both break through into Five Dock station site in the next week or so. They are due to pass through Burwood in February & North Strathfield mid 2024. They will then finish their job & be removed at Olympic Park.

Actual station construction should start in 2025.

North Strathfield metro station progress. The tunnel portals have appeared. Also a new machine for loading trucks with the spoil. The TBM is not due to pass through until late next year
