Meet Mary, the Couldn’t-Care-Less-er.
For her, “responsible travel” isn’t even part of the plan - unless it’s so effortless that she does not have to think about it.
Yet, designing for Mary means designing for everyone.

🥁That’s exactly the type of insights our new program, Inside the Traveler’s Mind, will offer. We will discuss what matters and what does not matter to the different traveler types, and where you should probably act:

🧠 Behavioral scientists know that people overweight immediate costs and undervalue future benefits.

In tourism, this bias means that guests often reject small-price upgrades or eco-options, even if the long-term benefits (lower footprint, better experience) are substantial.

💡 So, what can you do to increase demand for more responsible but more expensive options? Reframe the sustainable choices as immediate gains.
Example: “Select our green shuttle - skip traffic and arrive sooner”

📘 You can read more about this and many other biases that influence how guests respond to green messaging in the 2023 Behavioural Science for Sustainable Tourism (OECD) report in the 🔗 link in comments.

🤔💭At BehaviorSMART, we often talk about nudges and choice architecture. But what if those tools could be part of something bigger, something regenerative?

EHL Hospitality Business School’s Regenerative Hospitality Canva: A Transformative Playbook introduces exactly that kind of thinking. Instead of focusing only on reducing harm, it invites the hospitality sector to become a driver of positive impact - restoring ecosystems, empowering communities, and creating net-positive value for the places it touches. All of that while it continues to be profitable and successful in the eyes of guests. How?

📘 Read the full report in the comments below

As members of the EHL Innovation Hub, we are contstantly inspired by the intentional exploration of innovative hospitality models that emphasize human touch and care for places as non-negotiable features of the business models of the future. The Canva lays out the vision and structure for regeneration, while behavioral design helps make it real, in guest journeys, staff practices, and digital experiences.
Small nudges, micro-pledges, feedback visuals. These aren’t isolated tactics. They are the daily signals that help regenerative ambitions take root.
Regeneration starts as an idea and grows through behavior.

A few days ago, we shared the top questions we hear from tourism businesses trying to turn sustainability into everyday practice.
One question stood out:
💬 “How do we make responsible practices stick, not fade after the first success?”

It’s a question many destinations and businesses quietly struggle with. The first behavioral change feels exciting, but sustaining it alive once the novelty fades? That’s where most efforts fail.
Our newest article, “𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐍𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐦: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬,” written by Dominique Yates Musalem, dives right into this challenge.
During her internship with BehaviorSMART, Dominique explored how businesses using the beSMART Platform turn sustainability efforts into lasting habits. By working directly with platform users, she measured real-world impact and turned her findings into her master’s dissertation, now shared as this insightful article.

🧠 Inside, she reveals:
✔ Why most sustainability programs lose momentum after the first win
✔ The behavioral triggers that help new practices become the new normal
✔ Real examples of what makes responsible business stick over time

We keep hearing the same questions from tourism businesses.
When it comes to applying behavioral science, most travel businesses ask the same few questions, which are the most reasonable.

Here are some we get all the time at BehaviorSMART:
👉 “How can we make our sustainability efforts work when travelers are not willing to change their behavior?”
👉 “What's the first behavioral tweak that brings visible results?”
👉 “How do we know if our staff and guests are truly responding to our actions?”
👉 “How do we make responsible practices stick, not fade after the initial success?”
👉 “Where do we even start?”

If any of these sound familiar, you are not alone! We keep hearing them and have built our products to serve as practical, measurable answers.

💡 In the next post, we will unpack one of them, and show the behavior-smart way to solve it.

🛎️ In hospitality, small shifts in how choices are presented can lead to significant impact gains.
🔎 A 2024 study on digital nudging in tourism shows how interface design cues (defaults, labeling, progress indicators) influence responsible tourist behavior.

Behavioral science (especially in tourism) informs these powerful levers:
💭 Default settings - make the sustainable option the norm
💭 Social norms messaging - e.g., “most guests enjoy our tap water"
💭 Micro-commitments / pledges at arrival or check-in
💭 Feedback loops showing impact (water, energy saved)
💭 Framing loss vs gain (turned skipped room cleaning into a benefit rather than a sacrifice)

These levers are low-cost, fast to test, and many have shown measurable uplift in tourism or hospitality contexts.
