No yard should be running on outdated processes.

We still see operations moving serious trailer volume while relying on spreadsheets, manual inventory checks, scattered files, and radio-based move delegation.

That creates real problems:

No live view of trailer inventory.
No easy way to track empties.
No clean move history.
No real-time visibility.
No reliable yard performance data.
No scalable process as volume grows.

At a certain point, the yard outgrows the spreadsheet.

Fuel cost uncertainty is accelerating the EV conversation.

With diesel prices continuing to fluctuate, more companies are moving from “someday” to actively exploring electric yard trucks.

At one site, we helped transition the operation from 100% diesel to 100% EV — reducing weekly energy costs by nearly 91% with no loss in productivity.

Curious what EV could look like in your yard? Book an EV consultation with National Shunt.

As of May 6, Canada’s national average gas price hit $1.90/L, up from $1.32/L a year ago — a 44.5% year-over-year increase. In the United States, the average regular gas price reached $4.45/gal for the week of May 4, up from roughly $3.14/gal a year ago — a 41.5% increase.

When fuel markets swing this aggressively, operating costs become harder to forecast, harder to control, and harder to explain. That is where EV yard operations start to make a real difference.

Electrifying the yard helps reduce exposure to fuel price volatility, creates a more stable long-term energy model, and gives high-volume operations a smarter path toward cost control, efficiency, and sustainability.

At NSSL, we have the experience, operational knowledge, and implementation support to help customers electrify their yard the right way. The future of yard operations is more controlled, more efficient, and less dependent on unpredictable fuel markets.

Shuntware helps turn outdated Shuttle operations into more productive, controlled, and efficient systems.

With the right visibility, teams can reduce unnecessary bobtails, tighten move cycles, and get more out of the assets they already have. In one example, productivity increased 58% in just 4 months after implementation.

More control. Better decisions. Stronger performance.

Earth Day is a reminder that the future of our industry will be shaped by the choices we make today.

As yard operations evolve, the move from diesel to EV represents more than a technology shift. It reflects a broader commitment to efficiency, innovation, and more sustainable ways of operating without compromising performance.

At NSSL, we are proud to be part of the conversations helping move the industry forward. Meaningful change does not always happen all at once. Sometimes it starts with one truck, one pilot, one conversation.

Spoiled loads are not small misses. Food and beverage shipments have been cited at an average value of about $86,149, with meat loads often closer to $100,000.

The risk only grows in the summer. Higher ambient temperatures increase heat load, and delays during staging, loading, unloading, and storage raise the risk of breaking the cold chain.

Dwell time matters too. Average fleet dwell has been cited at 1 hour 54 minutes per stop, and 3 hours 16 minutes for refrigerated carriers. That is exactly why NSSL builds protection into the yard through both manual input and systematic processes. From disciplined checks and communication to integrating with the industry’s leading tools, we help our customers reduce the hidden cost of spoiled food before it becomes a claim, a service failure, or lost trust.

If summer volume is exposing risk in your yard, let’s talk about how tighter ex*****on and better visibility can help protect product, service, and cost.
