Another common EV misconception: performance will dip.

At one site, we moved from diesel to electric and kept productivity exactly where it needed to be:

5.5 moves per hour before EV.
5.5 moves per hour after EV.

No performance gap. No operational drop-off.

That consistency comes down to change management, planning, and having the right partner leading the transition.

One of the biggest EV misconceptions? Uptime.

Many assume electric yard trucks are harder to maintain and more likely to disrupt operations because of the modern technology.

In reality, with the right plan and the right team, the opposite can happen.

At one site, we helped transition the fleet from diesel to electric and increased uptime from 97% to 99%.

Less maintenance complexity. Stronger reliability. No drop in operational performance.

Results speak louder when they’re measured against the best.

When measured against a rigorous national scorecard, NSSL-managed operations stood out. With two of three sites ranking among the top performers across the customer’s network.

It’s a strong reflection of what happens when the right partner can adapt site by site, solve problems in real time, and align to the standards that matter most to the customer.

You don’t know what the yard is costing you until you finally fix it.

We’re still amazed by the results we’re able to help transportation teams unlock once the yard gets the attention it deserves.

For many operations, the yard has always been the forgotten piece of the network — managed manually, solved reactively, and accepted as “just the way it is.”

But once customers invest in the right provider, process, and system, everything changes.

Moves become cleaner. Visibility improves. Teams gain control. Supervisors stop chasing problems all day.

And eventually, the old way becomes impossible to recognize.

That is the real impact of yard transformation.

674 metric tons of CO₂ eliminated. One site. One year.

That is roughly equal to taking 157 gas-powered vehicles off the road for a year.

At this site, the EV impact went beyond cost savings. It showed what is possible when companies rethink their yard operations with sustainability, efficiency, and long-term resiliency in mind.

The conversation around electric yard trucks is not just about lowering fuel costs, it is about building cleaner, more predictable operations for the future.

Lower cost. Lower emissions. Same operational performance.

That is what real yard transformation looks like.

Decision-making in the yard is only as strong as the visibility behind it. With Shuntware, teams get a live view of trailer inventory, active moves, available empties, door status, and yard activity in real time. We've watched it help supervisors make faster, cleaner decisions without relying on spreadsheets, radio calls, or manual checks.

Many customers build programs to hold their yard providers accountable , but not every provider can meet the standard.

In this example, we took over three of the customer’s largest sites, including two that had been viewed as “problem child” facilities.

The expectations were clear. The standards were high. The issues were real.

National Shunt stepped in, aligned to the customer’s program, and raised the bar across all three sites. Scoring significantly better at all three sites within 60 - days of going live.

The result was more consistency, stronger ex*****on, and a yard operation that could finally meet the customer’s expectations day after day.

We do not just maintain standards.

We help build them.

No yard should be running on outdated processes.

We still see operations moving serious trailer volume while relying on spreadsheets, manual inventory checks, scattered files, and radio-based move delegation.

That creates real problems:

No live view of trailer inventory.
No easy way to track empties.
No clean move history.
No real-time visibility.
No reliable yard performance data.
No scalable process as volume grows.

At a certain point, the yard outgrows the spreadsheet.

Fuel cost uncertainty is accelerating the EV conversation.

With diesel prices continuing to fluctuate, more companies are moving from “someday” to actively exploring electric yard trucks.

At one site, we helped transition the operation from 100% diesel to 100% EV — reducing weekly energy costs by nearly 91% with no loss in productivity.

As of May 6, Canada’s national average gas price hit $1.90/L, up from $1.32/L a year ago — a 44.5% year-over-year increase. In the United States, the average regular gas price reached $4.45/gal for the week of May 4, up from roughly $3.14/gal a year ago — a 41.5% increase.

When fuel markets swing this aggressively, operating costs become harder to forecast, harder to control, and harder to explain. That is where EV yard operations start to make a real difference.

Electrifying the yard helps reduce exposure to fuel price volatility, creates a more stable long-term energy model, and gives high-volume operations a smarter path toward cost control, efficiency, and sustainability.

At NSSL, we have the experience, operational knowledge, and implementation support to help customers electrify their yard the right way. The future of yard operations is more controlled, more efficient, and less dependent on unpredictable fuel markets.
