Happy Labour Day!

On this day, we take a moment to celebrate and recognize the hard work and dedication of workers around the world.
Did you know that the origins of paper production date back to ancient China, where it was first invented during the Han Dynasty around 200 BCE? The paper-making process eventually spread to other parts of the world, including Egypt where papyrus was used to make paper around 3,000 years ago. Today, the pulp and paper industry employs about 6 million workers globally, contributing to the production of countless everyday products, from books and magazines to tissue and packaging materials.
As we celebrate Labour Day, let's take a moment to thank all of the workers who play a vital role in keeping our world moving forward, including those in sustainable industries. Your hard work and dedication are greatly appreciated!

It's Global Recycling Day!

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when recycling:

- Avoid getting paper wet, as this significantly reduces the recycling market.
- Try using a black marker to remove sensitive information instead of shredding paper. Ink is easily removed in the recycling process, but shredding paper reduces the fiber lengths, making it more difficult to recycle into new paper.
- Verify what types of paper are accepted in your area, as some communities only accept certain grades. Always check with your community before recycling paper cups, takeout containers lined with plastic or wax, tissues, napkins and any paper contaminated with food or other liquids.
- In the case of boxes (cardboard and cartonboard), break them down to save room in your recycling bin.
- Paper and paperboard packaging is always the more sustainable and recyclable option, so shop sustainably!

Fastest Rise in China’s Producer Prices in 26 Years

China’s producer prices rose at the fastest pace in 26 years this fall, beating forecasts and further squeezing profit margins for producers already grappling with soaring energy prices.

The jump was fueled by higher raw material costs and factory production cuts, causing a 13.5% higher PPI than last year.

At the same time, China’s consumer price index (CPI) only grew 1.5% in October year-on-year, suggesting the inflation pass-through from China’s producers to consumers has been generally subdued. However, there are signs that cost pressures are increasingly being felt by households too.

Other recent indicators show China’s economy is losing steam, with growth widely expected to slow further in the fourth quarter from a one-year low of 4.9% in the third quarter.

Slowing economic growth and soaring factory inflation have furthered concerns over stagflation, which could mean China moves cautiously on loosening monetary policy.

Ripple effects on the rest of the world could be significant. Even developed markets, including the U.S., would not be immune to a considerable tightening in global financial conditions. Moreover, the near-term outlook remains challenging, as a result of a negative China growth shock could have a global impact.

Consumer awareness of packaging waste in oceans and landfills is driving change.

As recycling alone cannot solve the plastic waste problem. We need to transition towards a more sustainable future and move away from plastic materials.

The packaging market has always been at the intersection of developments in materials, technology, legislation, and it has gone through many shifts in its material base.

In terms of sustainability, responsibly sourced paper is superior to all plastics, due to its renewable source and low or no use of fossil fuels in production.

Yet, one major challenge paper packaging has to address is a commercially viable coating technology that achieves the barrier properties needed without negative effects on recycling.

For this, we will hopefully see cellulose-based materials with appropriate barrier properties launched within the next few years.

Several specialty paper producers are developing paper-based packaging with coatings that can act as barriers to v***r, oxygen, and oil, and can therefore replace plastic/aluminum laminate packages.

With a further focus on paper packaging materials, we are sure to see practical solutions that can help substitute single use plastics.
