Chase the cracks and realize that this girl needed a bit of a core replacement due to compression from an impact.

I need to get better at documenting my process but setting up and banging out the core replacement in a day is already hard enough.

I see it all the time—cracks or gouges just filled with thickened gel coat or retail-store putty and called a day. You can see what that was hiding here. ➡️

Gel coat is a finish, NOT a structure. When you just fill a crack.

Zero Reinforcement: Without grinding back and laying new glass, there’s no strength. The hull flexes, the putty doesn’t, and pop—it’s gone.

Water Intrusion: That "plug" eventually shrinks or cracks, letting water seep directly into your core. That’s how you get rot.
Secondary Bond Failure: If you don't grind a proper taper, the new material has nothing to bite into.

If you want it to last, you have to grind it, glass it, and fair it. Do it right once, or do it over every season.

We often get asked: "Can’t you just put some filler in that crack?"

While a quick fix is tempting, filler is for looks—not for strength.

Our waters around the Bruce Peninsula can get rough, and your boat needs to handle that constant flexing and stress. Brittle fillers eventually pop out, or worse, trap moisture that leads to rot.

Whether you’re docked in Tobermory, launching in Lion’s Head, or cruising Georgian Bay, you need a repair that’s actually structural.

We don't just hide the damage; we grind back and laminate with proper glass and resin to restore the hull's integrity.

We do it right the first time so you can stay out on the water longer.
