We’ve been talking about squid a lot lately because over the next 6 weeks it will be a primary food source for migrating Chinook Salmon on the west coast.

In Ucluelet we’re able to offer charter guests the opportunity to catch salmon using a technique that most anglers have never tried. Catch your own bait and mooch them live to target salmon.

And the best part is - you can eat your bait. Guaranteed to be the freshest calamari you’ve ever tasted!

Comment “Jigs” if you want a link to squid jigs that actually work! We source ours from Japan 🇯🇵

We’ve been talking a lot about squid lately, which can only mean one thing: summer is starting on the west coast.

When the opal squid show up, one of the most exciting ways to target Chinook in Ucluelet is to relax and try this easy method.

Drop anchor. Jig up live squid. Send them back down on mooching gear. Wait for massive bites.

It’s simple and effective. No flasher. No downrigger. Just you, the bait, and the fish.

It’s easy, hands-on, and a totally different experience from trolling. Watching someone catch their first salmon this way never gets old.

And the best part?

You can eat your bait. 🦑🔥

One of our end-of-day traditions is taking a group photo before heading back to the dock.

I’ve taken so many of these over the years that my camera roll has become a sort of lazy fishing log. When someone asks, “How was the fishing on that weekend typically?” I can usually scroll back and find the evidence.

But the photos tell a bigger story than just what was caught.

As guides, our goal is simple: we want our guests to leave the boat with a smile on their face and a sense of accomplishment.

This might sound a little cheesy, but it was never really about a pile of fish on the deck. It’s about a family, a group of friends, or a couple spending a day together on the water. It’s about the anticipation before the first bite, the excitement when a reel starts screaming, the missed opportunities, the victories, the wildlife sightings, and all the moments in between.

The best photos aren’t always the ones with the biggest fish. They’re the ones where you can tell everyone had a great day and left feeling like the experience exceeded their expectations.

Looking back through these photos, that’s what I see.

When you can line up the first light bite with a window of high slack I know I’ll be getting literal goosebumps the moment I get the rods in the water. With conditions like this you instantly get the feeling your in for one of those days you’ll never forget.

Restoring the boat that built the dream 🎣

This boat has seen a lot of miles on the west coast, and getting her back into shape took time, sweat, and dedicated friends.

Boat restoration is never just one job. It’s fiberglass, hardware, wiring, safety gear, paint, deck work, fuel systems, electronics, and all the little details that decide whether a vessel is just floating, or actually ready for the season.

Huge thanks to and especially for helping make this project possible and supporting the rebuild that brought the ol’ girl back to life.

Welcome… to Jurassic Ukee. 🦖🎣

Some fish just look prehistoric when they come over the rail. Big teeth, big shoulders, bad attitude, and a reminder that there are still a few dinosaurs swimming around the west coast.

Out of Ucluelet, every trip has a little unknown built into it — salmon, halibut, lingcod, rockfish, wildlife, weather, scenery, and the kind of moments that make everyone on the boat start yelling.

Life finds a way… and so do hungry fish.

What’s the most Jurassic-looking fish on the coast: lingcod, halibut, or chinook?

My buddy Andre has been getting way too good at making AI fishing songs… so naturally we had to pair one with some Insta360 clips and drone shots.

salty gear, tired arms, full camera rolls, and the sky doing its best to steal the whole show.

Some days are about the fish.
Some days are about the wildlife.
Some days are about that perfect golden-hour cruise from the harbour.

And the best days give you all three.

Who are you bringing on a sunset run like this?

The art of the cut plug 🎣

There’s something pretty special about fishing the old-school way.

A sharp knife, a tray of herring, and a perfect rolling bait behind the boat. Cut plugging isn’t just about putting bait in the water — it’s about the angle, the speed, the roll, the tide, and knowing when everything looks just right.

It’s a classic West Coast salmon technique for a reason.

Simple gear. Real bait. Big anticipation every time that rod loads up.
