Canadian West Coast Labor Update – Strike/Lockout Notice issued.

The ILWU Local 514 (which represents west coast forepersons) has issued a 72-hour strike notice to the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA), with strike actions set to begin on Monday, November 4, 2024, at 8:00 a.m. PST, impacting both the Vancouver and Prince Rupert ports.

In response, the BCMEA has issued a coastwide lockout notice, effectively shutting down both ports beginning November 4, 2024 at 08:00 a.m. PST.

This decision comes amid increasing and unpredictable disruptions, with no clear timeline for how long the work stoppage will last.

The strike and lockout will halt all cargo operations involving BCMEA members across the province.

This includes all Port Terminal operations in Vancouver and Prince Rupert.

Rail operations are expected to continue throughout the weekend with capacity and inland acceptance to be further reviewed on Monday November 4th.

Contingency planning is underway, and we will continue to monitor and provide key updates as they become available.

Dear Valued Customer,

The Union representing the long shoremen’s workers at the Port of Montreal, provided notice to the Maritime Employers Association that their members would commence a general strike beginning on Monday, April 26 at 0700. While additional legislation has since been introduced for the Port to resume operations, until this has been approved and implemented, operations in the port of Montreal continue to be suspended.

In consideration of this situation, cargo moving via this port will not be able to be worked or received until the work action is resolved. This includes all vessel discharging, loading and rail activity that takes place for shipments moving via the port. We will keep you updated on ongoing vessel schedule changes when available.

We encourage you to visit the CN Rail website for more details or questions regarding status of their services via Montreal: CN - Transportation Services - Rail Shipping, Intermodal, trucking, warehousing and international transportation

Information on terminal status and receiving is available at:

Termont Container Terminal - www.termont.com

Please regularly check back with us for updates on cargo moving via this port.

MGT - Customer Advisory

Further to the strike declared by the CUPE 375 Union, please see below customer advisory from Montreal Gateway Terminals Partnership (MGT , Section 62, Section 77)

Trucking Service

Trucking service will remain closed until further notice.

Note that as commercial consideration to shippers and receivers, terminal storage on import and export storage will be suspended for the duration of the closures resulting from this strike.

Rail Service

Given the uncertainty of the operational impacts this strike will have to MGT’s organization post-strike, priority loading updates will be closed until further notice, as will the rerouting of cargo from rail to truck for grounded units, only.

For units in which have not yet arrived, we strongly urge customers to make the necessary routing corrections prior to vessel arrival. We also encourage customers to contact their shipping lines for information regarding MGT’s ERS program for containers moving by rail.

Once operations resume, MGT on a most -feasible basis, will work diligently with our partners to limit the duration of the impacts related to this strike.

Dear Client,

The Western Hemisphere is not the only place in the World that is having its fair share of bad weather this year.

South Asia is being hit hard by a Monsoon season that is especially hard.

Hong Kong, Macau and Shenzhen, China are suffering the after effects of Typhoon Hato that visited havoc on their region two weeks ago.

Typhoon Talim and Tropical Storm Doksuri are now inbound and expected to impact on Taiwan, the south-central coast of Mainland China (including Shanghai) and Vietnam over the next few days.

There will be an almost certain impact on transportation and infrastructure; service will be affected by air as well as by sea.

Read more about this series of storms in below article from Reuters https://www.reuters.com/article/us-asia-storm-taiwan/taiwan-battens-down-for-typhoon-talim-mainland-china-braces-for-twin-storms-idUSKCN1BO058
Thank you.

Taiwan issued a warning to ships and airlines canceled some flights on Wednesday as the island braced for Typhoon Talim, which was expected to hit cities including the capital Taipei, before hurtling toward China potentially as a super typhoon.

We wish to advise our valued customers of the impact of Harvey which made landfall Saturday, August 26, as a hurricane. The Port of Houston Authority has recently announced that all cargo terminals, will remain closed through August 29. Moreover, the U.S. Coast Guard continues to impose “Condition Zulu,” meaning no vessel activities are permitted, on all marine terminals in the Houston area. “Condition Zulu” is expected to remain in place until August 30, perhaps longer.

Although the dangerous winds have mostly subsided, the Greater Houston area is receiving historical rainfall amounts, and there is worsening flooding in many sections of the city. Many major highways remain closed, and transportation systems are disrupted.

We will continue to monitor storm conditions, as Houston remains under both tropical storm and various flood warnings, and provide further updates as developments occur.

We appreciate the patience and support of our customers during the 2017 Hurricane Season. We apologize in advance for any supply chain disruptions.

As always, we thank you for your continued support.
