What an incredible story 🇨🇦❤️

A former tech CEO who shifted his career toward social impact is spearheading one of New Brunswick’s most ambitious housing initiatives. Marcel LeBrun, a millionaire who sold his software company before launching the non-profit 12 Neighbours, is developing a 99-unit tiny-home community in Fredericton designed to provide long-term housing for people without stable shelter.

The compact homes, each roughly 240 square feet, come fully outfitted with a kitchen, bathroom, living space and rooftop solar panels. Residents contribute about 30% of their income—usually close to $200 per month—which covers rent, utilities and internet access, making the homes both affordable and sustainable.

But LeBrun’s project extends beyond providing roofs and walls. At the centre of the community is a social enterprise hub featuring workshops, green spaces and employment programs aimed at helping residents build skills, find work and reconnect with a sense of purpose.

For LeBrun, the development is rooted in the belief that housing is the foundation for broader transformation. His focus is not only on addressing homelessness, but on offering dignity, community and the opportunity for people to rebuild their lives.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow is proposing a TTC fare-capping system starting September 2026 that would let riders travel free after 47 paid trips in a month. The system, which would automatically track rides through PRESTO, debit, or credit, aims to make transit more affordable by removing the need to buy a $156 monthly pass upfront.

Advocates say it particularly helps riders who can’t afford a pass at the start of the month. Similar systems are already used in cities like London, New York, and Los Angeles. Chow is also asking the TTC to explore a 40-ride cap for the 2027 budget, signaling a push for even more accessible transit in the future.
