It all started in 1960 when Wilderness North founder John J. Mark, an aviation enthusiast and air force veteran, first came to Canada from Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Arriving in his own planes, John, affectionately known as Jack, quickly developed a fascination with the wide open space that is Northern Ontario. Over the next 30 years of flying in for his own fixes of the North, Jack made a decision, this

part of the world was to be shared, and in 1990 he purchased his first outpost cabin and Wilderness North was born. Through it all Jack had a clear vision – to open up the great Canadian wilderness to everyone who shared his passion for Canada and the wilderness.

After a very difficult few weeks, we are incredibly happy to say that we’re open and ready to welcome guests back!

It’s been a challenging summer for our family, our team and our community, and we are so grateful for all the messages, calls and support we’ve received along the way.

Our planes are flying, our lodges are ready, and it feels so good to be welcoming guests back to the wilderness.

The lakes are waiting, and so are we. We can’t wait to see you!

An update from the Wilderness North team:

We want to keep you in the loop as things continue to develop with the wildfires.

Here's where things stand: We didn’t lose everything. Our lodges and outposts escaped with minimal damage, and our floatbase at McKenzie Lake and our planes made it through safely too. We did lose our overnight base at Waweig Lake, an important stop for guests on their way in and out of WN.

Right now, the road to Armstrong remains closed, and some of our locations are within an evacuation/restricted zone and can't be accessed at this time.

We're currently working on a game plan moving forward, and we'll share more details as soon as we have them.

In the meantime, we are thankful for our team in their fire suppression efforts and our thoughts stay with the impacted communities, evacuees, and fellow tourism operators who are dealing with so much right now. Thank you for the continued patience and support.

As some of you may know, the community of Armstrong where our McKenzie Lake seaplane base was evacuated on Monday night due to wildfires. Our staff and guests are all safe and out of harms way.

We are incredibly grateful to our amazing staff through this unprecedented time; you have all been amazing.

Our thoughts are with the other outfitters in Armstrong, the communities of Armstrong, Whitesand FN, Collins FN and Whitewater FN and all the communities currently impacted by wildfires.
