The first of the month books out first, and the crews that are left are the ones nobody wanted. Book your elevator. We can't do this one for you — most Toronto buildings only take the request from the resident or the landlord, and they want it in writing, sometimes with a deposit. Ask your concierge this week, not the night before. Measure the big stuff. The sectional, the fridge, the wardrobe. Doorway, hallway, elevator opening. A lot of quote surprises aren't a scam. They're a description problem.
Four things worth saying out loud before anyone puts a number on your move:
What's actually moving. Not "a one-bedroom" — the piano, the treadmill, the eight boxes of books, the fridge you decided at the last minute to take with you.
Stairs and elevators at both ends. A third-floor walk-up and a building with a service elevator are two completely different days, and a quote built on the wrong one was never going to hold.
How far the carry is. Narrow street, no loading zone, a long walk from wherever the truck can legally sit — that's time, and it's better said in advance than discovered at 8 a.m.
What still needs packing. "We'll be ready" and "we'll mostly be ready" are not the same sentence.
Then get it in writing. The Canadian Association of Movers says the same thing to every consumer in the country: always get a written estimate before you hire anyone. Any mover worth booking will send one.

Then it's Saturday, it's the kind of hot where nobody wants to be outside, and someone is on their ninth trip in a hatchback with the seats down. The couch still hasn't moved. Nobody has eaten.
The drive was never the hard part. A short move inside Toronto takes about as long as a long one, because the work isn't the distance — it's the doorway, the landing, the elevator window, and the fact that nobody volunteers for the bottom end of the mattress.

After twenty years of moving days across the GTA, we can tell you something: the same four people show up at every single one.

The Planner. Colour-coded labels. A spreadsheet with tabs. Knows exactly which box the phone charger is in. Secretly our favourite person in the building.

The 6AM Packer. Swore they'd start last weekend. Is taping a box shut while we're already carrying the couch down the stairs. Somehow always finishes.

The Supervisor. Has not lifted anything. Has strong opinions about the order of the truck. Occasionally correct, which is the frustrating part.

The Ghost. Said "just text me when you start." Has not been seen since. Will appear for the pizza.

All four are welcome. We've worked around every one of them, and the move still lands on time.

Here's the part most people find out too late: we can't book your service elevator. You can.

In almost every Toronto condo the request has to come from the resident or the landlord — the building won't take it from a moving company. So this one is on your list, not ours. Three things to sort out with your concierge or property manager, ideally two weeks ahead:

Who files the request in your building — you, or the landlord? Ask directly. Some buildings also want a form and a deposit, and nobody mentions that until the day before.

How long is the window you were given? Two hours and four hours are completely different moves. That number changes how many people we send.

Where does the truck go — loading dock, ramp, or street level? Any height restriction? Our own truck fleet includes a 26 ft truck, so once we know the access, we send what actually fits.

Get those three answers, send them to us when you book, and your move day stops being a guessing game. That's the whole trick.
