Called about the porpoises / harbour dolphins at Cottles Island Lumber Mill, 8pm, 2 Sept, 2026. Because the little guys have so disturbed the sediment in the shallow cove, their navigation system shows nothing but clutter - they can't find their way out. They should be picked up and moved away by Fisheries people.

Words of some wisdom. Take a listen.

This week, on Thursday or Friday (27, 28 August) a construction crew of 5 or 6 are tentatively scheduled to install new ladders at the Summerford wharf - 9 of them. The Ladders are those large yellow things on a flatbed over by the mussel plant. The crew will be using a boom truck and some size of floating structure.
Activity at the wharf will slow down as we make efforts to accommodate this new work. We ask for the co-operation of everyone using the wharf.
We will be asking vessel owners to be around, or at the ends of their phones since boats will have to be moved as the Ladder crew works along the length of the wharf.
More Information will be posted as it arises.
And please be careful, we don't want to be completing any Form 7's - accident reports.
Thank You.

Safety is always a concern.
In workplaces and on worksites, barriers, ropes or gates are often used to prevent rubber-neckers, gawkers and lay-abouts from wandering into places where workplace hazards are likely to be present. Due diligence is an approach to be always practiced - be aware of your surroundings, watch for changing conditions, always be alert to moving machinery and vehicles.
At the Summerford Wharf, old-buddies drop by for a look around, to see how much fish this guy or that one brought in - something to talk about later when they meet up with their other analysts at the Irving Station or wherever.
This is all good.

But, you are unnecessarily in the way of people doing their jobs and you pose safety problems. Some of you stand between the weigh scales and the boat unloading!
If you are not a paid member of the fish collecting crew, or a crew member of the boat unloading, STAY BACK 50 feet from the reach of the overhead boom of the crane.
AND, Stop cluttering entry to the wharf by parking at the mouth of the wharf. Park up by the Pentecost Church ('til they toss you of there!) and walk down.
Better still, leave your car at the Irving and walk out!
Stay out of the way!

Since 2016, we the Harbour Authority of Summerford have been struggling (so far, with nothing to show for the many hours spent) to get a boat launch, a couple floating docks and parking spaces to accommodate 3 or 4 maybe 5 vehicle-trailer units - while boaters are out in boat. Crown lands Gander will not deal with the issue. Seemingly, they always create another obstacle, so much more BS to say no. Our MHA, Speaker Derek Bennet, has been trying to help, but they erect impediments to even him, perhaps the 3rd or 4th most powerful person in the Legislature. There's an election coming soon, send a letter to Derek, email, text or whatever to push our application through Crown Lands. Let Derek know you are prepared to vote Tory, (that buddy from Twillingate?) even if you have to hold your nose while doing so! No one but Derek - and you with your vote - can apply pressure to make the boat launch happen, at least move along the process. Without getting the provincial lands applied for, we, the Harbour Authority, a Federally funded outfit can do nothing.

Good morning Rodger,

As per below email thread concerning the application by the Summerford/Cottlesville Harbour Authority to acquire land for marine development with parking area.

In March you referenced that the application is in “held” status pending regulations being finalized.

Please provide an update on the application.

Regards,

Subject: RE: Applications 161242 and 163286

Good Day Derek,

Application # 163668 from the Harbour Authority is for access and a parking area which will be in conjunction with application # 163286 for a water lot to develop wharves, slipways and to expand parking areas by eventual infilling. A shoreline reservation applies on application #163668 however a parking area is not a use which can currently be considered under section 7 of the Lands Act. Recent amendments to the Lands Act included amendments to section 7 which allows for other purposes prescribed by the Minister, to the extent required for the purpose. It is my understanding that regulations are in the process of being prepared to define what other purposes may be considered within reservations of water bodies. Once this is completed we will be in a position to determine if application #163668 can be considered further. Since title to the area outlined for #163668 is requested, it impacts whether # 163286 can proceed also. We have placed the applications in Held status pending the regulations being finalized.

Regards,

Rodger
