Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! We at McCarthy’s Party have so much to be thankful for. From the wonderful team we have working here, to the partners working with us to make each tourist season special, and the amazing community of travellers who trust us locals to be their guides. We at McCarthy’s party are extra thankful for this tourist season and many more like it to come. Along with that, we are especially thankful for being able to deliver our very first Ireland tour, and our first full Maritimes tour as well. Our community is so beyond special to us, and all of these things encapsulate its spirit to the fullest.

Did you know that Newfoundland and Labrador is the only jurisdiction in North America to have a carnivorous plant as an official emblem? This plant is known as the Newfoundland Pitcher Plant, named this because of its pitcher shaped leaves at the base of its stem. It was chosen by Queen Victoria to be engraved on the Newfoundland penny, and in 1954 it became the provinces official flower. Our guide Carole Saunders snapped this photo of a few of the plants on one of her tours!

Some McCarthy’s visitors experienced the release of baby Puffins (known as Pufflings) this past weekend! This was part of a process known as Puffin Patrol, which is a Puffling search and rescue done by community members in Newfoundland. When learning to fly, Pufflings use the moonlight to help navigate them to sea, but with the rise of artificial light, they often get disoriented and wind up on shore. Residents of towns near big Puffin islands will head out after dark equipped with flashlights, gloves, and boxes, to scour for any stranded Pufflings. These babies then get released back into the wild, as pictured here!
