St. John’s International Airport will conduct an emergency planning exercise tomorrow, Tuesday, October 13th, 2026. This exercise, held biennially, ensures airport partners are prepared to respond effectively in the event of an emergency.

The exercise will take place from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in airside areas only, though an increased presence of emergency responders may be visible. Airport operations will continue as normal.

Twenty-five years ago, when air travel came to a standstill on September 11th, 2001, thousands of passengers found themselves unexpectedly in St. John's. One of those passengers, Rachelle Rennagel, recently shared her story with us and is hoping to reconnect with a family that she met during her stay.

Ms. Rennagel was travelling on Continental Flight 61, going from Brussels to Newark when her flight was diverted to YYT.

During her time here, she met a family from Morocco. Now, more than two decades later, she is hoping to find them again.

Additional overnight construction is scheduled tonight, October 7th, that will affect outbound traffic from YYT. Please see below for the details.

⚠️Traffic Advisory – Airport Heights Drive Detour, Southbound Portugal Cove Road Closure Overnight October 7

Overnight work continues this week to facilitate surface asphalt paving near the Portugal Cove Road roundabout.

From 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 7, to 6 a.m. Thursday, October 8, the following road closures will be in effect:
➡️ Airport Heights Drive: Closed between Hall’s Road and the roundabout
➡️ Portugal Cove Road southbound: Closed between Seminole Drive and the Trans-Canada Highway

Traffic travelling to and from the Airport Heights Drive area will be unable to enter or exit via the roundabout and will be detoured via Viscount Street.

Southbound traffic on Portugal Cove Road, heading toward the Trans-Canada Highway, will be detoured via Craig Dobbin’s Way, Airport Road, Major’s Path, Torbay Road and the Trans-Canada Highway.

Northbound traffic on Portugal Cove Road will maintain access through the roundabout and to Major’s Path. Traffic exiting Major’s Path will only be able to turn right onto northbound Portugal Cove Road.

Additional work is scheduled to take place near the roundabout on Major’s Path overnight on Thursday, October 8. More information about this work will be shared separately.

Detour signage will be in place. Please follow all posted signage, barricades and directions from on-site personnel.

As part of the City of St. John's construction project, the intersection of Portugal Cove Road, Airport Heights Drive, and Major's Path will be closed in all directions from 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6th to 6 a.m. on Wednesday, October 7th. Detour signage will be in place.

Those heading to or from YYT during the closure, especially for early morning departures, are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time.

We're seeking a Project Coordinator, Capital Projects to play a key support role in the planning and delivery of capital projects at St. John’s International Airport. Working closely with the Manager, Capital Projects, internal stakeholders, and external consultants and contractors, this position provides hands-on technical, coordination, and administrative support across all stages of the project lifecycle in a dynamic, live airport environment.

Teams showed grit and determination pulling a 67,000 pound fire truck all in support of Hope Air and those needing to travel for critical medical care.
