Here we have a classic case of terrible things to come if nothing is done soon. This is a Volvo MD40 series engine and the after-cooler is "blooming" - this unit needs to come apart and be serviced (cleaned and pressure tested). if it fails the pressure test it will need a new core. After-coolers are one of those parts we don't repair - It is a critical part and failure is usually catastrophic. Heres a really bad day - we were able to locate a donor block and build a new engine to get our customer back on the water. this was a more cost effective solution than a total repower of the vessel. Lets talk about PSS Shaft seals - they are an excellent and well proven shaft seal design. Every Marine repair Professional has something to say about their favourite shaft seal design. Mine are PSS.... They are a straightforward design that works reliably. if the shaft is grooved or pitted they will still work with minimal shaft dressing, of course if your shaft looks like it went through a meat-grinder you may have bigger problems that need to be addressed first but overall they are the winner for us here at West Coast Marine Diesel. The head was pulled due to an external coolant leak from the head gasket. after everything is checked for straightness it can be put back together and back into service - call us at west coast marine diesel if you need any major engine repairs - you would be surprised what we can do with the engine still on the boat.

Does the air inlet and outlet lines on your Caterpillar 3196 look anything like this? if it does give us a call and we can come and have a look. This is an indication of an issue underway, After-coolers help create a cold dense charge of air going into your engine and that helps you get horsepower. but there is a maintenance cost to that - when you have a saltwater to air cooler there is a chance of leakage - this "drool" indicates that leakage could be happening and service is required - call us at West Coast Marine Diesel and we can come down and help out.
