International’s maintenance guidance gives fleets another reason to take steer tire wear seriously.
On International trucks with IROS suspension, the rear axle U-bolts are not treated as a “set it and forget it” item. International recommends re-torquing them after the first 1,000 miles and then every 36,000 miles thereafter, with the interval potentially shortened to about 25,000 miles to coincide with an oil change.
International also issued service bulletin IK0300066, which instructs technicians to loosen the rear U-bolts, reposition the axle rearward within the saddle center-pin opening, re-torque the U-bolts, and recognize that alignment may be required afterward.
The issue being if axle position can change, then drive-axle thrust can change.
And if drive-axle thrust changes, the steer tires may scrub away valuable tread mile after mile.
So the feathered steer tire may not just be a tire issue.
It may be the visible result of axle position and thrust that were never checked.
If your International fleet is not getting the steer tire life you expect, we should talk.
