Grafting larva to make new queens!!👸🐝

I had a few minutes to kill before someone came to pick up their Nuc (starter bee colony) so I thought I’d make some more queens.
I take some freshly hatched larva, from one of my best queens and put them into special little cups that will then go into a queenless hive and the bees will turn them into queen cells that will eventually hatch out in to new queens!

This is how bees make wax!!
Similar to how we make ear wax, the bees have lands in their abdomen that produce wax. They then take the flakes of wax and mould them into their honeycomb and create everything they need to raise babies and store honey and pollen. 🐝😊

I received a call about bees going into a house under the siding on a 2 story house, where the siding and brick meet. 🏠
I knew right away they would be in the floor of the second story. This is one of the most common spots I get called about.
Luckily he owners had just installed carpet in the bedroom where the bees were.👍
I was able to pull back the carpet, tarp everything off and cut the floor.
Then I removed all the bees and all their comb. This colony had just arrived last week but there had been others there previously. These ones just found an old prebuilt house!
After everything was removed I sealed up their entry point and filled the area with insulation. Bees don’t like insulation, so the next ones won’t take up residence.
Finally I put everything back together looking like I was never even there. Minus the bees! 🐝
Another colony safely rehomed. 😁

Received a call about a swarm of bees in someone’s front yard bushes. Was able to get them into a hive box and to their new home. 😊🐝

I received a call about bees swarming around a chimney. At first we thought maybe they were just a swarm hanging out for a day until they find their new home. But after some back and forth with the owner, we determined that they were indeed making their way inside.
I checked it out and sure enough the had made a home in the space between the flues.
You can see the discolouration of the bricks around their entrance from the debris on their feet. 👣
I was able to carefully remove the bricks one by one to reveal the colony. The colony was well established and there were a bunch of hatched out queen cells, so the swarming must have been originating from the chimney not arriving at it.
Forgot to get more pictures, but I was able to clear everything out and patch the bricks back together like before, but without the gaps in the mortar.
The bees are safe and sound in their new home. 😊🐝

You can now find our honey on the shelves at this awesome local spot. If you haven’t been there before, they’re well known for their ice cream, dairy products, and drive-thru coffee, definitely worth the stop.

What makes this even cooler is that one of our bee yards is located right beside their farm, so it feels especially fitting to have our honey available there 🍯🐝

Yesterday was the start of cut out season for me.🐝 This one brought me to Strathroy. The bees were making their way into the soffit area through the holes in the trim detail. From the looks of all the debris in the cavity (over a foot deep!) they had been here on and off for many many years. I’d guess 10+ years. 😮
If the colony dies, wax moths will quickly get in there and make quick work of all the wax. Then bees will find the space again all cleared up of old comb and the cycle continues.
