Cross-border shipping doesn’t have to be complicated, but small details can quickly turn into costly delays.

At Roch Logistics, Canada–U.S. freight is a major part of what we do every day. A little preparation before the truck reaches the border can make a big difference.

A few important things to keep in mind:

Accurate commercial invoices — Make sure descriptions, quantities, values, origin and consignee information are complete.
Correct Harmonized System (HS) codes — Proper classification helps avoid unnecessary customs issues.
Proper packaging & labeling — Freight should be clearly identified and prepared for cross-border transportation.
Plan appointments early — Coordinate pickup, delivery and customs requirements before the truck is already on the road.
Work with an experienced transportation partner — Good communication between the shipper, carrier, broker and customs broker can prevent problems before they happen.

Whether your freight is moving Canada to the U.S. or U.S. to Canada, the goal is simple: fewer surprises, fewer delays, and a smoother shipment from pickup to delivery.

Your freight. Our priority.

BEHIND THE FREIGHT QUOTE 🚛

When you request a freight quote, there’s a lot more happening behind the scenes than simply calculating a rate.

At Roch Logistics, every quote starts with understanding the shipment: the equipment required, commodity, dimensions, weight, pickup and delivery requirements, and any special considerations.

From there, our team goes to work:

🔎 Capacity Search – Finding available equipment in the right market.
✅ Carrier Vetting – Reviewing safety, insurance, authority and reliability before assigning a carrier.
💲 Pricing – Comparing current market conditions and available capacity to provide competitive, realistic pricing.
📅 Pickup Scheduling – Coordinating the details to help ensure everything is ready when the truck arrives.
📍 Tracking & Updates – Monitoring the shipment and keeping you informed from pickup through delivery.

A freight quote isn't just a number. It represents the work required to find the right truck, with the right carrier, at the right price — and make sure the shipment gets where it needs to go.

That’s the value of working with an experienced logistics partner.

Flatbed vs. Dry Van: Which One Does Your Freight Need?

Not all freight moves the same way — and choosing the right equipment can make a big difference in cost, loading, protection, and transit.

🚛 Dry Van
The most common choice for general freight. Dry vans are enclosed, protecting cargo from weather and road conditions. They are ideal for palletized products, boxed goods, packaged materials, and freight that can be loaded through the rear of a trailer.

🏗️ Flatbed
When freight is oversized, unusually shaped, or needs to be loaded from the side or above, a flatbed may be the better solution. Machinery, steel, lumber, construction materials, and large equipment are common examples.

The important part? Don't choose equipment based only on the commodity.

Dimensions, weight, loading method, securement requirements, weather protection, and pickup/delivery facilities can all determine which trailer is right for the job.

Providing complete shipment details from the beginning helps avoid equipment changes, delays, and unexpected costs at pickup.

Right freight. Right equipment. Better planning.

Why Accurate Dimensions Matter

When requesting a freight quote, a few inches can make a bigger difference than you might think.

Accurate weight and dimensions help determine the right equipment, how much trailer space your freight requires, and ultimately what it will cost to move.

Incorrect measurements can lead to:

Reweigh or remeasurement charges
LTL reclassification
Unexpected additional costs
Equipment or capacity issues at pickup
Delays while a new transportation solution is arranged

Before requesting a quote, confirm the length × width × height of the freight as it will actually be shipped — including the pallet, packaging, crate, or anything that increases its overall size.

For irregular, oversized, or flatbed freight, accurate dimensions become even more important. A few inches can change equipment requirements, permits, routing, or how the load needs to be secured.

Better information = better planning, more accurate pricing, and fewer surprises.

Not every shipment needs an entire trailer.

FTL (Full Truckload) is ideal for large shipments, faster transit, and minimal handling.

LTL (Less-than-Truckload) is perfect for smaller shipments that share trailer space, helping reduce transportation costs.

Choosing the right option depends on your freight, timeline, and budget—not just the price.

Cross-border freight doesn't have to be complicated—but small mistakes can create expensive delays.

The most common issues we see include:
• Missing or inaccurate customs paperwork
• Incorrect weights or dimensions
• Last-minute bookings
• Incomplete pickup information
• Appointment scheduling errors

A few extra minutes spent verifying the details before shipping can save hours—or even days—in transit.

Planning ahead helps keep freight moving and customers happy.

Why work with a Canadian freight broker?

Because Canada–USA freight has its own rhythm.

Border crossings. Customs paperwork. Canadian geography.
U.S. customer expectations. Bilingual communication. Regional carrier knowledge.

At Roch Logistics, we understand both sides of the border.

We are based in Quebec, but we help move freight across North America.

Canadian roots. North American reach.

2026 freight reminder: the market can change quickly.

Rates, fuel, capacity, border delays, tariffs, and seasonal demand can all shift faster than expected.

Recent North American freight updates show a market moving toward tighter capacity and increased cost pressure in truckload.

For shippers, that makes planning and communication even more important.

At Roch Logistics, we help customers stay ahead by working the details before the freight is already urgent.

Plan early. Communicate clearly. Move smarter.
