👩‍✈️ Meet the Team! - Meet Shari! 👩‍✈️

We got the chance to ask one of our Fabulous Female Pilots some questions! Here's what she had to say:

✈ Tell us about your career and how it brought you to aviation. ✈

"I’ve dreamt of becoming a pilot from the time I was a child. I always had the same answer when people asked “what do you want to be when you grow up”. I did pursue this path directly out of high school, but was unable to finish due to family finances.

Fast forward over the past 2 decades, I pursued a career in real estate, worked incredibly hard to build a successful business and with my husband, acquired and built several businesses in order to place myself in a position where I could finally pursue and FINISH my dream of flying professionally."

✈ What is your proudest accomplishment? ✈

"After 20 years finally achieving my dream and obtaining my Private pilot license, commercial pilot license, multi-engine IFR ratings and passing the IATRA exam all over 2 years while working full time. And being able to purchase my own aircraft."

✈ If you could give one piece of advice to your younger self, what would that be? ✈

"Always have a goal but enjoy the journey along the way. Put the work in, don’t be too hard on yourself, never give up and you can do anything you put your mind to so get going!"

💜✈ Today Women in Aviation International celebrates the 8th Annual Girls in Aviation Day! ✈💜

In lieu of this event, we at Cascadia Air would like to highlight and celebrate our youngest, female pilot Alexis! She is an incredible inspiration to young aspiring female pilots chasing their dreams in aviation.

We asked her a couple questions and this is what she had to say!....

✈ When did your aviation journey begin?

I was 23 when I started to give becoming a pilot some thought. Shortly after graduating from UBC, my Dad was diagnosed with brain cancer and given a year to live. I then made the decision to put life and the LSAT on hold and move back home to spend time with him. Shortly after moving home, my Dad booked an intro flight for me and I absolutely fell in love with the challenge of flying. As a former F-5 RCAF fighter pilot and 787 Captain, he was my biggest cheerleader and we grew closer than ever with this newfound shared passion for aviation.

✈ Do you have any advice for the younger generation of pilots?

My advice for the younger (or older!) generation would be to just get started. Enroll in online ground school or at a local flight school, take that introductory flight, apply for scholarships. The most important thing is to take that first step. I think a lot of people are discouraged by the amount of time it takes to become a pilot, but that time will pass anyways so don’t give up and eventually you will complete the training. As for the prohibitive cost, we’re really lucky in North America to have access to so many bursaries and scholarships. I received a few bursaries that helped me through training and even received a scholarship to do my float rating. There are a lot of resources available, you just have to apply!
