One of the biggest culprits behind soft, spongy decks is the failure of factory sealant around deck hardware. Over time, UV exposure and hull flexing break down those original seals, allowing water to sneak past cleats, stanchions, and hatches, straight into the core on a sandwich constructed deck.
Because bedding compounds don't last forever—and some builders were notoriously lazy with factory sealing—all deck hardware should be pulled, inspected, and re-bedded every 5 to 10 years.
Re-sealing is good preventative maintenance, to avoid a costly deck restoration in the future.
