Rules of the road at sea

also known as COLREGs (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea), are crucial for safe navigation. Here is a brief and straightforward explanation of some key rules:

1. Lookout (Rule 5): All vessels must maintain a proper lookout to prevent collisions by using sight and hearing.
2. Safe Speed (Rule 6): Vessels must travel at a safe speed considering visibility, traffic density, and maneuverability to avoid accidents.
3. Risk of Collision (Rule 7): Vessels must use available means to assess the risk of collision, such as radar, to take early action.
4. Action to Avoid Collision (Rule 8): If there is a risk of collision, vessels must act promptly and substantially to avoid it.
5. Narrow Channels (Rule 9): Vessels must navigate carefully in narrow waters and avoid obstructing other vessels.
6. Traffic Separation Schemes (Rule 10): These schemes help regulate traffic flow in busy waterways to prevent collisions.
7. Overtaking (Rule 13): Overtaking vessels must keep clear of the overtaken vessel.
8. Head-on Situation (Rule 14): When vessels meet head-on, both should alter course to starboard to pass on the port side.

Understanding and following these rules are vital for the safety of all vessels at sea, preventing accidents and ensuring smooth maritime traffic flow.
