Lisbon at night is wonderful for taking photos. Included are some inside and out of the restaurant where we enjoyed live fado performances. Our table mates were from Germany and Canada. Out tour guide Rodrigo walked us through older neighborhoods explaining Portuguese culture including fado, which is often an expression of longing for loved ones gone to sea or possibly to war.

Scenes from Aveiro. Took the 45 min boat tour. Our guide told us it’s the second most expensive city in Portugal, with some 400 sq ft apartments going for over €1 million. Used to be know for salt exports, a relatively minor industry now. Salt marshes surround the town.

Scenes from the streets of Evora, in the Portuguese province of Alentejo. One of the country’s oldest towns, and one whose reputation continues to grow among tourists. As one local wine merchant told us, most towns in Portugal have maintained their character for centuries, but very few attract tourists. Fabulous boat cruise from Lagos to sea caves nearby. Luis and Roger led us through some very narrow openings, timing it perfectly with the wind and waves, and using the motor as needed to make sure everyone had a good view. Highly recommended. Blue Fleet offices in the train station

Got off to a rocky start. Couldn’t find Portugal Air at Trudeau International. Guy at the info booth checked it out and reported back “no flight tonight “. Called Portugal Getaways for explanation, since our e-tickets definitely said Oct 12, and confirmed that yes, we are confirmed… for tomorrow. Which is very strange, as I called just a few days earlier to confirm the date and time and was told October 12! The upshot is that we’ll be spending a night in Montreal at their expense. They didn’t specify a limit, so we booked a decent room at Marriott. And it was late so we decided to eat there. Not cheap, but we didn’t go all out, just a nice meal with a glass of wine. Got the official apology next morning with an offer of a boat excursion in Benagil.
