This 1995 Carver 430 Mariner was recently hauled for a seasonal bottom cleanup and a full hull inspection as part of an insurance survey. Haul-outs like this are the perfect opportunity to really see what’s going on below the waterline—hull condition, running gear, through-hulls, and overall underwater integrity.

Carver yachts are well known for their solid construction, generous interior volume, and comfortable cruising layouts. But no matter how well a boat is built, time, use, and the marine environment always leave their mark. That’s why periodic inspections—especially during haul-outs—are so important for safety, insurance compliance, and long-term value.

If you’re planning an insurance renewal, purchase, or seasonal maintenance, a proper survey while the vessel is out of the water can save surprises later.

This was found during a survey on a Bayliner 3888 Motor Yacht. A minor saltwater leak was dripping onto the gearbox, and in a very short time it created heavy salt residue and visible corrosion on the transmission casing and nearby components.

Saltwater is unforgiving. Even a slow drip will aggressively attack castings, fasteners, seals, and paint almost immediately. That’s why it’s so important to:
• Inspect all seawater hoses, fittings, and clamps regularly
• Replace gaskets and seals before they fail, not after
• Keep engine spaces clean and dry so leaks are spotted early
• Never ignore “minor” drips—salt doesn’t wait

The good news? This one is very manageable. Remove the hose, clean the area thoroughly, replace the gasket or fitting, stop the leak, and address the surface corrosion before it progresses.

And that’s the key takeaway: the rest of this boat was in great shape—this was the only recommendation. Finding small issues early is exactly what a survey is meant to do.

This beauty is a 2005 Grady-White Gulfstream 232, powered by twin Yamaha 150 HP outboards, plus a 9.9 HP kicker — all sitting on a trailer and inspected as part of a pre-purchase survey. A solid, capable offshore package that’s earned its reputation over time.

A quick nod to the brand 👇
Grady-White is known for building boats that can take real water. Strong hulls, smart layouts, and a focus on safety and fishability have made them a favorite for coastal cruising and offshore runs. Boats like this are often well built — but that doesn’t mean they’re immune to age, wear, or hidden issues.

That’s where a pre-purchase survey comes in. Even quality boats can hide surprises in fuel systems, electrical installations, structure, steering, or engines. A proper survey gives buyers clarity, leverage, and peace of mind before money changes hands.

Whether it’s a top-tier brand or a smaller runabout, every boat deserves a thorough look.

This is a through-hull fitting that’s severely corroded and seized in the open position — and that’s a serious problem. When a valve won’t move, you’ve lost your last line of defense against water entering the boat.

A few key reminders for boat owners 👇
✔ Through-hull valves should be operated regularly to confirm they actually open and close
✔ Seized = failed — if it won’t move, it’s time for replacement
✔ Hose clamps must be replaced at the first signs of corrosion
✔ Below the waterline, having two stainless steel hose clamps is strongly recommended
✔ Hoses, clamps, and fittings should all be compatible and in good condition

This setup is a perfect example of how maintenance can quietly sneak up on us. Corrosion doesn’t happen overnight — but when it’s ignored, it can turn into a real risk fast. In this case, the fitting requires replacement, not just adjustment.

It’s not about blame — it’s about catching these issues before they become emergencies. And that’s exactly why surveys matter.

This is a 1959 Glasspar fiberglass boat, paired with a classic Johnson outboard, and it’s the kind of setup that stops people in their tracks. Pure mid-century boating vibes.

A little history for the classics fans 👇
Glasspar was one of the true pioneers of fiberglass boatbuilding in the 1950s. At a time when most boats were still wood or aluminum, Glasspar helped prove that fiberglass could be strong, lightweight, and beautifully shaped. Their designs influenced an entire generation of runabouts and cruisers — and today, they’re highly sought after by collectors and vintage boat enthusiasts.

Matched with an old-school Johnson outboard, this is basically a floating showroom piece. These motors aren’t just engines — they’re mechanical art. Clean lines, bold colors, and a sound that instantly takes you back a few decades.

Vintage boats like this aren’t just about nostalgia — they’re about condition, originality, and proper care. Whether it’s for insurance, valuation, or peace of mind, classics deserve professional attention just as much as modern boats.

This is a good example of a battery installation that needs attention. Batteries are the heart of your electrical system, but if they’re installed improperly, they quickly become a safety hazard.

Here’s what should be happening on board 👇
✔ Batteries must be securely fastened so they can’t move in any direction
✔ Installed in an acid-proof battery box or tray
✔ Terminals must be covered with protective boots to prevent shorting
✔ Cable runs should be clean, supported, and properly terminated with heat shrink
✔ Too many wires stacked on battery posts? ❌ Not acceptable
✔ A lid on the battery box is strongly recommended — especially in machinery spaces

When batteries are loose, uncovered, and overloaded with wiring, the risks go up fast:
• Accidental short circuits
• Electrical fires
• Corrosion and premature battery failure
• Damage during rough seas or knockdowns

A proper battery installation isn’t about being fancy — it’s about reliability and safety. This is one of the most common deficiencies found during surveys, and it’s usually easy to fix once it’s identified.

Here’s a photo of a Gooldrup fiberglass fishing vessel — a real piece of West Coast maritime history. Boats like these were built by the Gooldrup family, a small but respected boat builder based in British Columbia. Their founder, John “Jack” Gooldrup, was born and raised in Pender Harbour and became known for crafting tough, seaworthy fishing craft perfectly suited to BC’s rugged coastal waters.

In an era when commercial fishing was transitioning from wood to fiberglass hulls (1970s through the 1990s), Gooldrup designs stood out for being solid, functional, and built for the real world — not just showroom floors. Their boats were used as seiners, longliners, and general workboats, proving reliable under heavy use and still appreciated by skippers and owners decades later.

Although the company is no longer building boats today, vessels like this one carry on the legacy of West Coast workmanship — rugged hulls, practical layouts, and a design ethos rooted in everyday fishing life.

👉 If you’re checking condition, value, or insurability on a classic fishing boat (Gooldrup or otherwise), don’t guess — get it surveyed.
