We’re excited to share that the Moosomin Airport has been selected to receive a CAPP Grant (Community Airport Partnership Program) for an AWOS - Automated Weather Observing System.
Through this grant, the Ministry will reimburse the Municipality for 50% of eligible project costs, up to a maximum contribution of $136,500. The Moosomin Airport Board is now putting plans in place for summer construction!
What is an AWOS?
An AWOS is a fully automated weather station that continuously measures critical aviation conditions such as:
Wind speed and direction
Temperature
Visibility
Cloud height
Precipitation
And more
The system processes this information and broadcasts real-time weather data to pilots via radio, phone, and online platforms.
Why Does It Matter?
Nearby Virden Airport (CYVD) uses this system to provide pilots with live weather conditions including wind, visibility, altimeter settings, and runway information.
This level of accuracy allows aircraft to operate with lower weather minimums, meaning planes can land safely in poorer weather conditions.
If you’d like to see an example of an AWOS in action, check out Virden’s system here:

The installation of an AWOS at Moosomin Airport will significantly improve aviation safety and accessibility for our community.
